Maybe saying that it is fixed is over stating the case. But since the short "traffic island dead ahead" bicycle lane is after the bicycle lane ends sign then I guess there is no legal obligation to ever use it - even so, it certainly isn't helpful, being wedged between two lanes of cars with drivers expecting you to know your place and stay in it is less than ideal - riding in the centre of the lane as you approach that roundabout is the safest option. Having a bicycle marking in the middle of lane and a sign saying "Cyclists may use full lane" would be the best option.

To Jeremy -- What would you have done differently Heather? -- not use that bicycle lane. Bob Cumming who studied safer roundabout design for cyclists recommends having a merge area for cyclists and vehicles 50m before the actual roundabout. So Tim's idea is better. I have seen that sign posted on AC before but what countries use it? Is it a legal sign in SA? If anyone can prove that it is an Australian Standards sign, I am prepared to discuss with the pertinent DPTI project manager.

Well, bicycles can *always* use a full lane, where the road is divided into lanes.Apart from that, every vehicle should position itself on the road appropriate to the direction of travel. This causes emotional difficulties for about 1 % of drivers, who will honk you etc. The rest will accept your place on the road, if you choose to assert it. Most cyclists do not tho, suffering as they do from "cyclist inferiority complex". Unfortunately, I am legally required to use silly bike lanes when they are present, however dangerous they happen to be - one minor reason why I oppose them in principle. Cheers & Thanks / G.

Just wondering isn't there a road rule where it states Keep To The Left Hand Side OF The Road Where Possible ??

The road rule states to "keep as left as practicable"
Being overtaken through a roundabout or corner is not practicable. Nietther is riding in a door zone at speed.
In this case the middle of the lane is as left as practicable.
