Hi and nice to meet you. I have just arrived in Adelaide from England. I have arrived on a working visa. I am looking to join a cycling club but don't know what is the best for me. I ride a road bike, I have done a lot of touring and long distances. Any suggestions?

Also, I was supposed to bring my bike over with me but the travel agents let me down by giveing me the  wrong information. It turned out my bike would have cost me hundreds of pounds to bring over. I am bikeless and looking to buy a second hand bike. Does anyone have one for sale or one that I can borrow?

Look forward to hearing from you.....

Hi Emma,

Firstly, what suburb are you based in.

You have come to the right place, ( Both Adelaide, and Adelaidecyclists.com ) as we have some great cycle opportunities and clubs to ride with.

If you are Northern based, then there are a couple of choices: There is Gawler Wheelers or a new and upcoming group Gully Grinders. If your living down South then you could try  The Muddies.

There are several more clubs that meet centrally, but I have not had personal experience with them, although you can check out the All Groups section of this website and you will see plenty more.

The groups here are all friendly and welcoming to ALL levels of riders, and newbies are always looked after.

Hope to see you soon

Pete.

I live coromandel valley, south of the city, near Glenelg, if that helps. I am looking for more of a touring club, not yet fit enough for racing. I am after a second hand road bike, aluminium frame 47 49cm. Hope that helps. Thanks a lot for your help. Emma

I agree with Pete Roberts as I am a Gawler Wheeler. If you want to do some bicycle racing ranging from elite to dead slow like me then I suggest Port Adelaide Cycling Club. You don't need to live near Port Adelaide (I don't), feel free to call me on 0411 143 035.

Emma, there are many groups on this site covering a wide range of activities and rider ability.  There are many groups not on this site too.

There are a number of very good clubs in Adelaide too, eg VLCC, Norwood, Adelaide Uni and PACC as mentioned by Mark.

What you are really looking for is hard to determine from the information you have provided.

Can you tell us more about the bike you would be looking for?

I am more into the touring side, not racing, not yet fit enough! I live coromandel valley south of the city. I require a road bike, aluminium frame about 47 to 49cm. I hope that helps.

Look on www.bikeexchange.com.au has quite a few 2nd hand bikes that would be better than those you find in the average classifieds though it is mainly new bikes of every type, size, colour etc, show the full stock list of about 30 bike shops in Adelaide plus a lot a few hundred interstate shops many of which will sell on line and ship your bike to you

If you are interested in touring per se you should look at the Adelaide Touring Cyclists. They have a group here on this site and their own site. They do a range of rides from overnight tours to one day randonneuring. They meet once a month at the Sturt Street Community Centre in the city.

What size frame do you need?

I am a 47 to 49 cm, very small. Looking for a road bike. Thanks a lot.

the Adelaide Touring Cyclists often have unsealed road on their rides.

Typically in Adelaide a road bike is one that has 700c wheels, skinny tires, drop handle bars, 2 chain rings on the front and built light rather than robust.

we get all sorts of bikes donated at the bike workshop.

but theses are typically old and scruffy this has the advantage that you can leave it untended for more than 5 seconds and it will probably still be there. how new and shiny you like (and can afford) your bike is a personal thing you can get a ride abal secondhand bike for as little as $50 or you can spend thousands.

I would guess that immigrating would be financially (and emotionally) demanding so your budget is modest.

how tall (what frame size are you) are you?

Wow, you're the second person form the UK who as quoted a huge price to get their bike to Oz. I got my bike there from Canada - 3 planes and 18 hours in the air for $50.00...

Enjoy you're stay in Adelaide - it's a lovely city!

Emma,

Also worth taking a look at BikeSA - www.bikesa.org.au. They organise quite a few tours,  either program of day rides around the metropolitan area - or bike camps or trips e.g Flinders Ranges, Yorke Peninsula.

Mike.
