Adelaide Cyclists

Some scum bag has just cut through my bike lock and stolen my bike from under my bedroom window!!

It's a new Avanti silver Discovery comfort bike, with black and tan handle bar grips and 2 bike cages that I added. If anyone sees it PLEASE get in touch. My house insurance didn't cover it (yes I know, lesson learned)

Bast*rd.

Hey there Jo

Sorry to hear about the theft - what sort of lock was it? I did an interview with the Messenger once discussing how to best avoid having bicycles stolen (I know 20/20 vision does not help much here, but happy to post some tips for future reference!!)

Do you have the frame number, have you reported it to the police (sorry have to ask these obvious questions), have you checked local Cash Converters store and the like, and lastly do you have a photo of it or something equivalent off the interweb? Also, did it have any other accessories that would make it stand out from the crowd?

BTW do you have a replacement bike or a second bike to ride? I am sure that something could be sorted through Adelaide Cyclists depending on your needs

Cheers

Jeremy..

Thanks Jeremy. I didn't have the frame number, apart from always locking things (mine had 2 bike locks on it) I don't usually concern myself too much with the thought of theft. Lesson learnt!!!!!! I've been to the police, they've suggested I try the Cash Converters on Brighton Rd, but really I think it's pretty much gone.

Hopefully I can claim for it on my house insurance, if not it's a long wait to save up and eBay I guess.

One thing about locks is to have two locks of different types, eg: a u-lock and a cable lock - that way the potential scum bags who are scoping to steal your property have to have two types of tools to break the locks with - check http://www.streetfilms.org/hal-grades-your-bike-locking/ for some tips and humor!
take care

Ah crap!

Jo, What area are you in? These messages get Tweeted out to the general Adelaide (Online) community.

I hope you get it back and as Jeremy has said I'm sure someone would be able to get you a spare.

Is it pretty much this Jo?

That's exactly it! It has 2 bottle cages, one metal, one plastic and mountings for a front and back light. I've just been to the police and they've suggested I leave it a couple of days and then have a look at the cash converters in Brighton Rd.

Thanks for the messages of support. I've emailed my house insurance, HOPEFULLY I'm covered, but I didn't own a bike when I took it out.

Fingers crossed

Cheers Jim, my bike had 2 locks on it, but they used bolt cutters on it. Clearly they had scoped the place and had a good look at what they were after. B***ards!!!! I might take you up on the offer of a loan bike while I wait on my insurance company. However, I'm a bit of a Pommie short arse at 1m60, so it may be too big if it's a fella's. Also, given that the thieving bar stools have obviously scoped the place I'm not sure where else I could store a bike safely. My kitchen maybe!

Hey Jo
I keep between 4 - 6 bikes in my living room at any one time :-)
- if you have high ceilings you might be able to use a pully system to store it out of the way, may even be able to get my hands on one if you are interested (a friend had one that he did not need, can check if he still has it..)
good luck!

That's crap Jo! Maybe a storage solution like this might be needed for the future?

Jo, that sux. A bit like all of the other advice, if you only have a small place, I'd try to find some way of even mounting it to a wall if you have to. From my understanding, due to the turn over in stolen bikes, Crime Converters must now hold on to any bike for two weeks just in case it is one that came, courtesy of some sticky fingers.

We'll all keep an eye out, but without a frame number, we might end up thumping the wrong person!

Another lesson for all cyclists, record your frame numbers somewhere just in case!
