I mentioned in Dahondude's 3 Peaks Blog that I had fitted some Q Rotor elliptical chainrings on my bike, and was asked to post some pictures of them; so here they are. It doesn't come out that well in the photo, but the big chainring is quite elliptic, You can see the multile mounting holes which allow you to customise the angle to suit your riding style.

I have had the large chainring on for a few weeks and am finding it really good, but have only just had the small chainring fitted as it needed to have the crank removed to fit it.

What benefit do you get from elliptical chain rings?
No loss of power on the down and up strokes due to a smaller dead spot at 6 and 12 o'clock.
I have Shimano Bio Pace which are elliptical. They seem to smooth out the pedalling cycle which results in a high cadence. I like them.
Nice work :) I looked into those as I like my Biopace chainrings, but the cost of the rings alone was enough to put me off
It'd be interesting to take these on a 2-hour hilly ride and see how they feel, but I guess no-one is offering test rides :-(
Rob W, Unfortunately they are expensive, a friend of mine who uses them originally suggested that they would suit me a couple of years ago. I looked into them at that time and just couldn't afford them; but eventually the Aussie dollar got to where it wasn't quite so bad, so I thought I would bite the bullet and get some. They ended up about the same price as buying Dura Ace in Australia.

I really am starting to believe that the distributors in this country are killing retail sales, by forcing retailers to give us unattractive pricing compared to OS :(

Mine came on an old steel frame and seemed to survive the upgrade to tiagra (2nd hand and worn out) but is going to be refurbished with ultegra cranks, dura ace BB and ultegra cluster. It survived a 9 speed chain so lets see how it handles a 10.

I had looked into these as a solution to help me get up checkers. I wish campag did a 12-27 but sadly not so I will stick with my 12-25. For me I want to know if they manage to do what they claim. I was concerned that I would be gambling the money as you can't try them out.
Sarah, I don't think that they will directly help you get up something like Checkers, they are still the same gearing as you have now. However from my experience so far it would have been easier to cruise up Gorge Road and you would have found that you were overall a bit fresher when you got to Checker so it would be a bit easier to get up from that point of view.
they are cheaper at Up front bikes, o"halloran hill. $279
Still a lot of money to drop on a set of just rings. I'd let people try my steel frame, but downtube shifters on hills are risky if you aren't used to them.
