This morning I had my first one-man crash. Braked too hard, skidded, and fell.
In case they're on here, I just wanted to thank the two bloked who stopped and helped me put my chain back on. Bless them.
Got right back on the horse (so to speak), rode the rest of the 13km home, and arrived all in one piece.

It sounds as if you did a complete and thorough job of damaging yourself.
After 3 weeks I would have thought that you should be clearly on the mend but everybody is different.
I am assuming you have discussed this with the doctors and are not just suffering in silence.

Permalink Reply by heather on March 21, 2012 at 11:34 Katrina, hope the following helps.
I broke my right shoulder on 16-Oct-2011. Off the bike for 4 months. Still some background discomfort in my arm, but nothing like the first few months. Have not regained full movement of my arm and time will tell if all muscular or any permanent movement loss from overgrowth of bone while injury healing. Still going to physio, now once a week instead of twice. I am not giddy but have headaches still. Medicos said that headaches because I hit my head, and that would be the reason for the severe headaches. Knew immediately that I had done something where neck meets back, but medicos told me that pain was all from the weight of my arm hanging from the sling. Sling off since 25-Dec-2011 and still headaches, so also a neck injury. It is surprising how one crash can produce cuts and bruises, and another crash at low speed can mangle bones. My shoulder break was compacted -- fell with my arms out and the force of breaking also pushed the bone pieces together, so did not require surgery. So my injury not as bad as yours which required plates and pins. As for the arm weakness -- the arm is kept in a sling for weeks while bone starts to knit -- this shortens the muscles which then need to be eased back into use, so expect some arm weakness. What I am re-learning is that a bicycle seat can make one sore. The longest period I had been off a bike for years.
Permalink Reply by Just another psycho-list on March 21, 2012 at 19:37 Thank you, Heather. Falling is such an annoying thing. Not just from the pain aspect, but the slow recovery and the many days, weeks and months off the bike.
Hope all you girls are on the road to recovery and back on the road/ trails soon.

Permalink Reply by heather on March 24, 2012 at 15:29 Ian, I got back on the bike mid-February. Difficult using a backpack while lacking full arm movement (and some discomfort) so not back into my usual cycling. However, I persevered from Saturday to Friday so that my replies to the Bicycle Network cycling survey would look good.
Permalink Reply by Hannah Cursaro on March 25, 2012 at 18:09 aww I'm sorry to hear that, I hope you recover well. I really need to make up a little first aid bike pack.
Permalink Reply by heather on March 25, 2012 at 18:42 Hannah, suggestions include: treatment for grazes and cuts; cotton bud to remove insects from eyes; material for a sling in preparation for the cyclists' injury (broken collarbone); a compression bandage in case of snake bite when cycling the hills and the veloway. Some items could double for temporarily stemming arterial wound. Add a reflective emergency blanket in case of shock of accident, or hypothermia if caught in cold wet conditions in the hills.
