mixed govt messages on cycling, road safety & climate change

Letter published in The Advertiser of Saturday 23 January 2010 on page 70.
Cyclist unfriendly

Mr Rudd was in Adelaide this week,
attended the Tour Down Under and talked about transport. Perhaps he can help
those who cycle in Prospect.
The Prospect Council wants a section of Prospect Rd narrowed and the bicycle
lanes removed.
Either cyclists will be overtaken by buses with less than 0.3 metre clearance,
or have to claim the lane from buses. The added cycling stress and hazard will discourage sustainable transport of
cycling.
The council released preliminary plans, and the State Government has provided
money to draw up detailed designs. The council has applied for a large grant from the Federal Government.
The Prospect Road Masterplan, in regard to cycling, does not meet State Government documents: Safety in Numbers, A Cycling Strategy for South Australia
2006-2010; Cyclist road rules and safety; Share the Road. Neither does it meet the campaign of A Metre Matters, launched in November by
the Federal Minister for Transport, and Local Government
.
