Hey there, I'm looking to do a charity ride with a group from my office from Melbourne to Adelaide nex year. I'm guessing maybe 8 days if all goes well. Has anyone done this? Was it dangerous? What about insurances? Any info would be appreciated. Cheers

Hi Bruce....have done Melbourne to Adelaide twice so far. The first time was last year with a group called Square2Square over 8 days to raise money for the Livestrong Cancer Centre being built at FMC. Earlier this year I rode again but on my own over 5 days as was suppose to participate with a group  called Cycle of Life to raise money for Transplant Australia but the ride has been postponed until later this year. I decided to do the ride anyway in honor of Dennis and Matt Tozer as it is important to make each day count....Simply love the open road and just getting out for adventure to see where the bike will take me. Would love to hear more about your adventure......

Hi rob, wow sounds like your an old hand at this route. I would appreciate any tips you have on setting this ride up...route, accommodation, training, best time of year for wind etc, is 8 days achievable for a group of social riders. Thought 120kms a day and make the trip a challenging 1000kms,also plan to have support vehicle ( do we need police authority) we will be looking to go from southbank to light square, not sure on the chosen charity yet but think it would be good to help out someone directly rather than plough cash into a major charity (even though cancer research is very close to me).. any tips appreciated...cheers

Yes Bruce..1100 km over eight days is achievable for a group of determined cyclists. There are several people I know who could definitely help you with this project and organisation of it. You will need a group of like minded determined cyclists who are focused on achieving the one goal together as a team. Just send me a message and I will pass on my phone number to you.

Hi Bruce. Have also ridden MEL-ADL (with Rob)  If you wish to support a Cancer Research Charity, could I suggest the Flinders Medical Centre Foundation. These people are transparent as to where the money goes. None goes to wages etc as their salaries are funded already. A worthwhile cause. I might add at the same time Cancer Council of SA has a reputation of 'using' approx 80% of money raised on 'Admin' .  Ring Deb Palmer at FMCF.  I also was a co-organiser of RIDE4REPAT and have ridden two other Interstate rides (for Charity). Any advise will be gladly given. Derek.

hello Bruce

the long distance riding is unbelievably rewarding - when you get to the finish line :)

I have organised a couple so if you wish to chat happy to share ideas

I rode to Melbourne a few years ago with a group of friends (3 couples and 3 blokes whose wives don't ride).  A wide range of abilities.

We rode down the coast to Kingston SE, cut inland to Naracoorte, over to the Grampians, South down to Warnambool, along the great ocean road, caught the ferry at Queesnscliff and rode up the Mornington peninsula to Melbourne.

About 1300 km in 2 weeks with a couple of rest days. (Naracoorte and Warnambool).

We had a support van with luggage and cooking equipment so we could have morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea on the road when we found a good spot.  We took turns driving the van so we didn't have any dedicated support.

Accommodation was almost entirely caravan park cabins and we cooked most of our own meals (pasta featured highly)

I have also done 3 other similar style rides in other parts of Tassie and Victoria.

My only advice would be to stay off the major highways wherever possible.  It will make for a more pleasant ride and is arguably less dangerous.

No special insurance.  I have Ambulance cover already but other than that I can't think of anything else that I would want to insure against.

No charities involved, we just did it because it's fun.

Cheers

Alex
