So changed jobs recently so instead of Semaphore to Marion each day on the flat bar roadie, now have the trip up Port Rd to town.  After two weeks don't have too much to complain about aside from amount of rubbish in the bike lane and terrible road condition in the bike lane (espcially near cheltenham cemetary). For the most part the new to me bike lanes from entertainment centre to Clark terrace/Cheltenham Rd are a great addition.

The only other beef I have is the Australian Post van at Woodville Rd parking in the bike lane every day, is this allowed?

Anyhoo coming home thursday night, at about 530 I'm in the woodville area and I saw something that made me mad, laugh, cry and almost give up riding all at the one time, as I come up on the Cycle Worx bike store, there is a man putting a bike in his boot and another getting out of car and walking in the bike store, BOTH ARE PARKED IN THE BIKE LANE, at one of the two times of the day that is designated for no parking and just for bike, ie 4:30 to 6pm.

As I passed and entered the left car lane to get around, I yelled out "you're going to the Bike store and parked in the Bike Lane", both looked at me like I was talking Vulcan.

In some ways it really goes to show how much more work is need in driver and rider education, the pessimist in me think maybe we will never change, but what the hell we can all change our ways, maybe as a start the store could remind people if they see them parked there at that time.

Stay safe yall

Yep, good place to start - I would say remind the store to remind their customers that it is a bike lane outside the shop and the fine for parking there is $xx..
Also, alert the council to vehicles that might be consistently parked in the lane at certain times and certain locations...and hopefully they will start to actively 'police' the bike lane!
Think you will find that OZ Post vehicles have exemption - re the bike lane. Which I guess is fair enuf. However the bike store parkers certainly do not. The worry of that situation is that these drivers will then probably jump on their bikes with the same 'couldn't give a stuff' attitude. And the circle just keeps going around and around.
Aust Post, Buses, Police etc all have exemption to the no parking in a bike lane rule.

I might drop in and see Andy & Craig next week and let them know what's happenning there, or even send them a message on their Facebook page.
I go the same way to work each day, but starting from Alberton. The route is mostly pretty good, though the grooved road surface through Cheltenham / Woodville is annoying as you say. Also, on the way home the roadworks at Koolunda Street extend out into the Port Road bike lane meaning there are patches where the road surface is replaced by packed gravel.
All of you who commute along Port Rd (though I don't know why anyone would use that road, like I don't know who would use South Rd unless they had to) should catch on the tail of the cyclists who use the back streets along the northern side of the train line between Port Adelaide and the city. I went this way with some other cyclists last week and then came back to the city along Port Road... I know which was the more relaxing ride. I won't be using Port Rd again!
I have constantly pestered authorities about illegal parking over ten years on Prospect Road but have not stopped it. A possibility is to take details and report to SAPOL Traffic Watch on 131 444 but usually police refuse to record these. Last time I first said breach of Australia Road Rules section 187, then had to explain it was stopping in a bicycle lane, and the officer took the report.

Postal vans are not permitted to park in bicycle lanes. It took a few letters and phone calls cos drivers would ignore instructions, but hope it is now solved at 144 Prospect Road. You may copy my letter that follows.

Re: Postal Vans Constantly Parking Illegally in Bicycle Lane

Will Australia Post please instruct their postal workers to no longer park postal vans illegally in the bicycle lane near ……….? Also please refresh all your professional drivers in South Australia of the Australian Road Rules. Include in this the person(s) who schedules Australia Post vans to stop in bicycle lanes. This offence, which creates a safety hazard for cyclists, has been repeated for about ……. months. Australia Post parking in the bicycle lane sets a bad example to other inconsiderate drivers.

The Australian Road Rules make it clear that most vehicles are not permitted to park in clearways or bicycle lanes. Exceptions include emergency vehicles like ambulance or police. The Australian Road Rules under the Road Traffic Act 1961 (Cwlth) contains:
Division 4 Stopping on clearways and freeways and in emergency lanes
176…
Division 6 Other places where stopping is restricted
187 Stopping in a bicycle lane…
313 Exemption for postal vehicles – but does not include rules 176 and 187 as above.

Copies to SAPOL, local council and Minister for Transport.
I worded the following sign to discourage illegal parking on Prospect Road. Not used because a trader would not help (customers avoid fines) by sticking sign to glass doors. However, expect your bike shop to help. Adjust the wording to suit. Check the fine amount with the local council, because some include extra for victims of crime levy.

Car parking at rear.
Bicycle lane, not car parking,
4.30pm to 6pm weekdays.
Please park in the rear car park
and avoid a $165 fine.
Joe, will you please reply when you see my 2 postings with hints. Also let me know if suggestions help.
Thanks heather for the advice, have spoken to the bike store and they share my frustrations and working on it, as for general parking in port rd bike lane concern and the apparent lack of policing going to try some local gov and sapol contacts and see how that goes, really just have get them thinking about it, used to commute along greenhill rd for years and most night there would fines on wipers for cars parked in the bike lanes, it was clear it was on the inspectors regular schedule
thanks
