Magpie season...
After feeling like a magpie magnet last year, I have a feeling I'm gonna attract them again this year. I copped my first swooping on Saturday on the way back from the Muddies ride. Perhaps they can sense evil...?
It was still June you silly birds!!!!!!!
The notorious Marino train station magpie - who drew blood against someone last year for memory - got stuck into me as I waited for a train by the boom gates unable to flee.
Can anyone beat that? Or have I won the gold medal being first?

Those little shites nailed me every time up Norton and Woods Hill last year, and they thoughtfully staggered their nesting/ swooping over several weeks/ months to get their moneys worth. You'd think after sitting there watching thousands of cyclists ride by for the rest of the year, they'd cut us some slack!
Would have thought it a tad early for them in July, but they dont appear to be too bright! :-)

Wow I was just talking about those little buggers today! Seems very early to be starting! Thought it was late August usually! Must say I was out for a walk with the fam yesterday and commented to my wife as we were walking past one such bigger that didn't move and obnoxiously puffed it's chest out (we were about 1m away) that it looked like a swooper! Hate magpie time of year!

The same two have been swooping for me every day I ride for the last three years. Even got me in the dark 6am a couple weeks back.
This doesnt mean we are going to start seeing people with cable ties in helmet again is it?

doesn't stop them swooping but will stop them tapping on your helmet. Eyes on top of the helmet will also work as the cowards only attack from behind.

I saw a video a few months ago where they tested different helmet additives to see if any helped. They tried all sorts of things like cable ties, googly eyes, and even a plain head. Dare I say the best results came from the ride past without a helmet. Of course this was a very minor test but the guy was able to ride all around the tree without hassle from the magpie.
Personally I doubt ditching the helmet when riding past a magpie will guarantee safety seeing as they swoop pedestrians as well. Hopefully this year people will have the dignity to leave the cable ties at home.

I saw that video too.
On the helmet issue, I'd rather wear it because if the magpie involved hasn't seen the video, the helmet does provide some protection (more so than my bald bonce anyways)

Wearing a helmet a couple of years ago did nothing for me. Riding thru Nth Adelaide (on Le Fevre Rd, just past the playground) the crafty buggar came in from the side and tried to poke my left eye out. I had sunnies on but it still drew blood. Frantic arm waving shooed the buggar away.
