Lost: Garmin 800 GPS
Location: Repton Road/King George Avenue, North Brighton
Date: 5th May
Time: Approx 10:30am
Description: Garmin Edge 800 bicycle computer – white strip model
Serial number: 22M029391
Unit Id: 3817125672
After this mornings ride along the esplanade today, I packed my bicycle onto my car bike-rack and put the Garmin on the roof while I secured the bike. Then promptly forgot about it and drove off – the result one lost Garmin.
When you turn the unit on, my email [nzuraw at gmail.com] and mobile number is shown for about 10 seconds.
If you have found it or know anyone who has found a garmin, please let me know.
Thanks.
My route from where I lost the Garmin...

Hopefully someone from AC will find it. We are all nice people on here :)
if i head out tomorrow i will have a look down that way for you, feel your frustration
if you can post a map of your route when you left that will help narrow the search
on another note how did you get your phone number etc on start up, might do the same on mine
Permalink Reply by Baron Zuraw on May 5, 2012 at 19:22 Hey Brett, thanks - I drove back down and walked the route for about 500m but no sign of it. I drove down King George Avenue all the way down to South Brighton and across the tracks to the Brighton Road.
Phone number etc on startup was with a custom firmware I was testing.

With the 800 plugged into a PC open the GARMIN drive then open the Garmin folder and you will find a text file called startup.txt.
You can put a phone number or any small amount of info in there.
Permalink Reply by Baron Zuraw on May 5, 2012 at 20:42 I appended the google maps route on my post - thanks much appreciated to you and everyone else.
Permalink Reply by G Ward on May 5, 2012 at 23:17 Sorry to hear of your loss. I always dread having something like this happen. I once found an iPhone that was lost the same way. The owner was so glad to get it back.
Anyway, I've just tried putting a startup.txt in the top level of the Garmin drive and nothing different was displayed when I turned it on. I would really like to have this feature - I think any portable electronic device should have contact details on startup (my organiser from 20yrs ago had it, but not a lot of devices since).
Is there a minimum version required ? My unit reports as Software Version 2.10 and GPS Software Version 2.70.
Permalink Reply by Don Macdonald on May 6, 2012 at 9:56 Not sure what you are doing but from what you say it appears you are trying to add a startup text file, that is not the way to do it you find the startup.txt file that is already there and add the info you want to it.
The text already in the file is as follows,
<!-- Edit this file to display a message while your unit is powering on -->
<!-- Allow one full power cycle after editing for your message to be updated -->
<!-- Set the display number to the minimum number of seconds your message is displayed -->
<display = 4>
<!-- Type your message on the next line -->
You have an old version of software but mine worked with the original version and still works on SW version 2.4. you should update. Hope this helps.
Permalink Reply by G Ward on May 6, 2012 at 22:01 Yep, I had to create it - there was no existing startup.txt file. I just put a line of text in to test.
I have now tried with the contents you've included above preceeding my line of text but no difference.
So it looks like I need to update the software. You don't happen to know what your original version was ?
I'm not normally a fan of updating firmware unless necessary ("if it ain't broke, don't fix it") - I've seen enough failed firmware updates in my time to prove this to me. But this is a feature I'd appreciate having so I might have to bite the bullet.
Permalink Reply by Don Macdonald on May 6, 2012 at 23:41 It is part of the Garmin file system, are you sure you are looking in the right place, I don't meant to infer that you don't know what you are doing but you never know. First Garmin drive then Garmin folder and it should have been in there between the Sports folder and the Text folder.
Hopefully I have uploaded a copy of the file, it is an original Garmin supplied file so don't change anything other than to add whatever you want in place of my name and phone number.
My original version was whatever the first 800's came with, forgotten the number, I think there have been 2 firmware updates so far .
Make sure you place it where I have indicated or it will not work.
Permalink Reply by G Ward on May 7, 2012 at 0:17 Oops. Thanks Don. I didn't read your original message properly. I didn't read the few words mentioning Garmin folder. Yes, my 800 had a startup.txt in there (with no message and a 0 second display time). I have moved the one I had in the top level (which included the extra data from your previous post) into that folder and it is now working so I'm now a very happy camper. Just have to customise the message now.
Thanks a lot for the help.
