Looking to upgrade my wheels
Hi all,
I am currently running a Shimano R500 wheelset and to be honest i have found them to be quite average the wheels are about 15 months old and in the past 6 months i have broken 3 spokes.
I am looking to upgrade although i'm not ready for carbon wheels. I'll probably be looking to spend between 500-700 give or take.
I basically want to know what is the best bang for my buck.
I was concerned a bit about my weight currently around 85kg but after further reading about the R500 it appears they break spokes regularly.
Would appreciate any advice.

I've heard Deep V are unbreakable. I'm the same weight as Jarrod and went a bit lighter, choosing Velocity Fusion 18/24 . Last year I found them on special at 'Bums on Bikes' store from Brisbane. Until just recently they were Aussie made too.
They were good value for money. You could pay more for even lighter, but then I'd be concerned about reliability being a largish rider. The 18 count on the front worried me a bit but they handle my weight fine on miles of country roads and have done a lot of climbing too.

you won't break them.... Other nice rims for the heavier rider is the DT Swiss 585.

They look flashy, roll pretty well, and are more than a bit bullet proof. Can be rather affected by the wind though!

another option is custom wheels, might be an option to talk to this guy. One of my mates has spoke to him, looking to get some MTB wheels. He does aluminium and carbon road wheels, the carbon wheels use either Enve or Reynolds rims, DT swiss spokes and "Japanese" hubs.

Ditto that recommendation. I have had a set of TWE wheels on my climbing bike for 3+ years - roll very smoothly & never any issued or adjustments. It is a one man shop & Greg knows his stuff.

2010 vintage Ksyrium Equipe $599 and Ksyrium Elite $749 at Lifecycle Kensington rd Norwood. Weight shouldn't be an issue. I use a set of Equipes as my workhorse abuse road wheels - on road off road bit of single track and after 3 years have not had a spoke key near them.

Campag Neutron Ultras, at 1540gr and both a wicked climbing and everyday wheel.
Super ultra smooth bearings which you can service yourself and a wheel set that can take your weight easily.
They come in shitmano hub guise as well!
Its on the money you are looking at also.

other than that, Mavic Ksyrium Elites are pretty good value and quite sturdy. I ran them for a number of years on my roadie and they never went out of true. Velocity Deep V wheels are pretty good, and near bullet proof.

I was very happy with my 2006 Mavic Ksyrium Elites until I started having some hub issues with them early last year which was probably due to a lack of enough maintenance on my part. I also broke one spoke about 3 years in.
I think they are a good choice but make sure you maintain them in accordance with the manufacturers specs. :-o
Currently on cycling express for $699 or $719 at bicycle express online store. I think both would include free postage.
I recently got a pair of Dura Ace C24's for $799 from cycling express (sorry $969 at the moment) which I think are great and far and away better than the Ksyriums that I had (6 years newer too so they should be too).
So don't rush in, find a couple of options and then keep an eye out and be ready for specials at your LBS or online.
