I am trying to sort out some saddle issues. I have a road bike and have never been happy with the saddle it came with, a generic Selle Italia, an x-1 I think. I think it is too narrow. If it helps I am a guy and tall and heavy. I have tried all the usual Chamois creams x2, quality knicks x3, seat angle and height adjustments x1000 but nothing works with it. I am not a racer but currently spending over an hour at a time on the bike.
I have also tried one of the Selle SMP ones, not impressed and a lot to pay. I have a brooks b19 that is good but hoping to relegate to the Shopping bike.
If there is anyone who has some saddles sitting around their sheds that they are willing to lend I would love to have a go. Happy to pay a deposit, also happy to collect and return. Not fussed on condition. If it turns out I like yours and you are willing to sell then we might be able to come to an arrangement, if not at least I know what I will need. Not looking for carbon rails or super light stuff.
Any help greatly appreciated!

Permalink Reply by Ian Rawley on June 29, 2012 at 23:34 +1 for the Brooks. It took around 6 months and 6000km for B17 standard width to be totally comfy but now I reckon I can ride it all day if only I could get a chance, and will last lifetime. Just getting a nice shine now after 12,000km. Have a nearly new B17 narrow that requires more breaking in. If only I could find someone to do that for me...ooh aaah just can't quite bring myself to do it yet...

I went through a similiar process for a while, was getting uncomfortable and felt like a nerve was being pinched after about 50km. I mentioned it to Noel at BikeStation and he had me take my bike in so he could fit a test saddle. I went to outer harbour and back but found the saddle hard after the one I had, Noel basically suggested that I not come back until I had done a few hundred km's.
Surprisingly I actually got to like the harder and wider saddle and didn't have any further nerve type issues. It turns out that the previous saddle was too narrow and the "sit" bones weren't taking the full weight.
The saddle I trialled and now have is the 'Prologo Zero Pas Gel'
If you are down Brighton way just explain your issues to Noel and I would be surprised if he doesn't have a solution.
Hope this helps.

Unlike the Brooks there is almost no break in period and there is no requirement to treat the leather every six months. If you go for a Titanico check the different models and ensure you get the one suited to your weight.
I've got a new Titanico in the shed you can look at but it isn't for sale. I like them so much I bought a spare. I've also got a well used version on my Long Haul Trucker that you could test ride.
