just interested what people are doing.

For a long time, I've been fairly comfortably doing about 250kms/week, trying to squeeze in a necessary rest day as well.  I've been doing that consistently for a couple of years.

More recently, I've been pushing up to 300km/week, but I have rarely succeeded in finding the time/energy to reach the higher target.  I needed a rest day today - my body demanded it - so with tomorrow's ride I'll be close to 300 but again just short.  With all my rides over 30kph/ave, 300km/week feels like a bit of a limit at the mo.

Just interested in what other 'fairly serious recreational road cyclists' get up to per week, and at what pace as well.

cheers.

The question is about KM's per week right? With comments about average speeds...I would have thought its a training question (riding further, faster, etc). There is a common theme with a lot of people struggling for time with family, work, etc.

I train 14+Hrs a week and I could not find the time to ride out to Murray bridge on any day. Quite a number of cyclist need to have their long ride done and dusted in 3 to 4hrs max.

If you have limited time quality and consistency IS the key. Not me preaching just relaying what is commonly accepted in the sporting world and verified week after week.

I cycle nearly everywhere but my commute is short because I live near the city and within short distance of everything. I rarely add the bike computer to record my short distances. The way I look at is, how few times have I driven rather than cycle? Took the car out on 10-Sep-2012, before a cycling accident in Oct which vetoed cycling and driving for some time. Yesterday I drove the car for the first time in 7 months, although I aim to drive every 4 weeks to keep the vehicle going.

I average about 230km per week over 3 to 4 rides with approx 5000m of climbing. Practically all my rides are in the hills, i probably should do some easy "recovery" rides, but i'm not training for anything, just ride, usually by myself, just because i enjoy it and its a bit of "me" time.

It would seem to me that people ride because they are motivated to do so. That motivation varies between indeviduals and is their own personal reason. What some people have not ralised is that a personal motivation can change and that you need to know that it has so that you can realign your riding to satisfy that motivation.

If you want to ride more then you already have the motivation and you just need to work out how you can fit that into your life. If that means getting out of bed at 4am a couple of days a week, taking on a challenge like often seen on Strava or finding a group of people  or a riding partner that has like goals can often help.

If your goal is competative then training programs are the only way to go if it is not then they are purely a chor!

Personally I have a mix of both, I have competative instincts but my body does not have the competative drive so I ride for social reasons and add challenges from Strava to satisfy my competative instints. I do not enjoy any aspect of training programs so will simply not follow one. I want to enjoy my riding and when I stop doing that it could be the time I stop riding.

I have only been riding for 8 months and at this stage feel I will continue to ride for a long time to come but I simply don't know as ones feelings can change at any moment!

Bottom line, if you want to ride more, find a way to do so rather than thinking you should ride more because others are !

+1 Steven.

I rode 460k for May and 705k in April. My 5 minute wattage varies about 8-10% over the year going from 5 watts per kg to approx 5.3 at peak fitness.

When you eat clean and train with a power meter you don't have to do much training relevant to your individual goals.

If I include my work rides, around 200km a week depending on the weather.  It's been shocking of late so my normal Sunday rides and Wednesday Lofty mornings have been left wanting ... so 100km a week has been my recent norm.

I'd be looking at about 200km/week. 50-80k's of day to day commuting and the like, which I don't record (but it's a 5k commute to uni/town each way, and I'll often do it twice in a day) plus a solid ride in the week and another on the weekend (which I record with strava) usually both are 60-80k's each. It's been less in the last month as I've been studying for exams, but my biggest week would have been about 350k's.

My proper riding is almost all hills, and I aim to be climbing 2.5-3km weekly.
