just interested what people are doing.
For a long time, I've been fairly comfortably doing about 250kms/week, trying to squeeze in a necessary rest day as well. I've been doing that consistently for a couple of years.
More recently, I've been pushing up to 300km/week, but I have rarely succeeded in finding the time/energy to reach the higher target. I needed a rest day today - my body demanded it - so with tomorrow's ride I'll be close to 300 but again just short. With all my rides over 30kph/ave, 300km/week feels like a bit of a limit at the mo.
Just interested in what other 'fairly serious recreational road cyclists' get up to per week, and at what pace as well.
cheers.

I work only 5km down the road. so I add 50km per week on my commute. Almost not worth getting the bike out for.

Permalink Reply by Rob (Chewbacca) on April 20, 2012 at 23:45 Lately have been riding different bikes to keep the cycling fun.....also has enabled me to spend more time with the family lately given the tragedy we have faced this month.....still commuting to work each day, grab an RPM session on a stationary bike a few times a week when I have an hour to spare. Lately have been acquiring weekends off but usually only ride on either saturday or sunday giving time to the family on the day I dont ride. When I go visit the parents up in the hills I take the bike rather than drive which means my wife is free to use the car so she stays happy......happy wife....happy life. Sometimes after work can get out for a ride if nobody is home. The kilometres are really not that important as ultimately it only matters how you ride them and not do too many junk miles. It is better to ride 60km at 80 percent heart rate than to ride 180km at 50 percent heart rate to gain any weight loss or fitness benefit. Enjoy and rejoice in the experience and hopefully the cycling wont become a chore and become a burden. It is nice to catch up with friends and ride in groups, as it is just as nice sometimes to head out on your own and see where the bike can take you.....Chewbacca knows the bike can take him anywhere and have many great adventures and enjoy the freedom :)

Permalink Reply by Patrick O'Kane on April 21, 2012 at 7:41 My kms have dropped off this year due mainly to work but also a change in goals. I'm doing less kms on the bike each week but focussing on getting as much out of each km as I can with a view to racing with the vets on a Sunday morning.
Permalink Reply by RD6 on April 21, 2012 at 8:23 Seasonal e.g. summer / spring / autumn and school holidays tends to give me more mileage per week as well depends on my racing calender, sometimes I do "recreational miles" e.g. recovery and cruising miles with rides like Muddies / SSRC and "training miles" such as strava segments and some fast group rides. I find that some of the strava challenges tends to make you work a little harder trying to click more kilometers.
Permalink Reply by Dstone on April 21, 2012 at 8:24 Due to injuries, familly and work im doing way less then I have for a while but make up for it by detours on the way home to find a little climb. Usually will add only another 5-10 mins. i also dont do it on my "good" bikes but do it on the heavier CX bike or even the mtb.

Permalink Reply by Trevor Hill on April 21, 2012 at 10:36 160km commute each week. The ride to work is a sprint with an average of 27-29km/h. The ride home is a relaxed ride usually along the coast. A quick 1 hour ride Saturday morning. Then the occasional 3 hour Sunday leisure ride. Do about 8000km a year.
