just interested what people are doing.
For a long time, I've been fairly comfortably doing about 250kms/week, trying to squeeze in a necessary rest day as well. I've been doing that consistently for a couple of years.
More recently, I've been pushing up to 300km/week, but I have rarely succeeded in finding the time/energy to reach the higher target. I needed a rest day today - my body demanded it - so with tomorrow's ride I'll be close to 300 but again just short. With all my rides over 30kph/ave, 300km/week feels like a bit of a limit at the mo.
Just interested in what other 'fairly serious recreational road cyclists' get up to per week, and at what pace as well.
cheers.

However the week before that 749Km during RIDE4REPAT. That certainly helped with the fitness. Oh and by the way I am retired and 66 yo so usually a rest day on Monday and Wednesday :)
Permalink Reply by Pete Roberts on April 20, 2012 at 22:56 Where do you ride Derek to amount that kind of distance ? Do you have a set of routes that you like to ride, or do you just 'ride'?
I log my distance more by the month rather that the week, ( sounds more that way :)
Anyway up until October last year, I was averaging 600km / month, but then I bought a new bike, and found that had crept up to 800/900 km/ month.
I actually increased my distance by reducing my rides : I was riding Tue and Thurs about 40km & 60-80km on a Saturday. ( plus my commute )
Im now riding just Tuesdays and Saturdays but Tuesdays are now around 80km and Saturdays are always over 100km, often a lot more. ( plus my commute )
Last year I clocked 6600km, this year on target to crack 10,000km.
I do however still work 95 hour fortnights so, fitting in lots of riding is not always easy...
Permalink Reply by Derek Hasel on April 22, 2012 at 15:51 Peter I log each ride and have done so for the past 12 years. ALL details. Have lots of different routes. Live at Seaview Downs and go to O/H for a 70KM. Also up to Lofty. Gumeracha, Meadows. You name it
It's about time you got out to the Gawler Wheelers on a Saturday Derek, being an ex navy man the early start shouldn't bother you.
Permalink Reply by Trevor Hill on April 21, 2012 at 10:25 Did you race with the vets? What is your average speed after a ride? Certainly a fantastic effort!
Permalink Reply by Derek Hasel on April 22, 2012 at 15:53 Trevor I don;t race with the Vets as I am informed that is a bit 'bitchy' and I love bike riding too much for that. I might add that I have opnly 'raced 3 times and one a Gold and two Silver medals at the Polce and Emerg Svs games in 2004.My averages vary from on the flat of 28-30kph or in the Hills ( to Gumeracha, about 25kph)
Permalink Reply by Juz on April 20, 2012 at 20:53 Wow, I feel very, very lazy now.
There are only so many hours in each day and all of life's committments need your attention too - job, family, eating/sleeping etc etc. To push one element in our lives further, it will costs us something somewhere else. Do you have something that you can let go of in order to increase your kms? And is letting go of that thing worth the kms?
Alternatively, can you add an extra 5kms onto every other ride you do? If you commute, can you ride a small detour to add a few kms each day? If you're determined to add the kms, a few extra kms added to each ride is probably more achievable than adding another ~50km ride in each week.
Derek has awesome total kms, but as he said - retired. For someone who's not at work 5 days per week, those totals are comfortable. For those of us who work, it requires a lot more juggling.
Permalink Reply by Derek Hasel on April 20, 2012 at 21:11 I agree entirely. I also agree with your comments re 'extending' rides. When I worked in the City I would ride a loop that would add an extra 5Km ea way rather than just a short cut. Also riding some mornings, early, was an option too. I guess it comes down to quality against quantity. I would also make sure that I did not just 'dawdle' on any ride but attempt to be consistent with my pace. I am nothing special and did not play sport for most of my life, so I guess there is hope for us all :)
Permalink Reply by rossmg on April 20, 2012 at 22:35 LOL! I'm lucky to crack 100km per week, but then I am primarily a commute cyclist and a commute is ~19km round trip. My average is 27.5km/hr, I haven't reset my cyclo-comp in a few hundred klicks...

Permalink Reply by Simon Lownsborough on April 20, 2012 at 23:07 Wow, do you guys actually do anything but ride?
I do about 180k commute per week, and 70 - 100k on the weekend, so around 250k+ a week. I totalled 7300k last year.
Love it, but also love my family, so happy with things as they are. If I'm still keen when I retire, I might just double that figure!
