My son had a pupil free day yesterday.
I took him and a friend to Walparinga this was a total of about 12 Km.
They both seemed to enjoy it
it seems that getting him away from the play station is a lot easier when there are others his own age involved.
Do people think there would be some interest in getting kids out with a parent for a ride?
After all any exercise is better than none.

Permalink Reply by MarkK on February 14, 2012 at 13:46 one of the best rides ive found for kids is around the parklands in the city.
Park in the Royal show car park (Cnr Greenhill Road and Goodwood) and ride clockwise. kids love the riding through the cemetery, train lines, torrens . stop at Rundle St for a Juice , along Vic park race course, a couple of laps of the BMX track on Pultney St. and then back to the car.
Been riding for 4 years with my girl, she is 8 now.
Permalink Reply by rossmg on February 14, 2012 at 15:45 I'm proud to say my 7yr old's longest ride to date is about 28Km, at about 10Km/hr average speed :-)
We usually get on the Linear Park for a loop ride from home but I think chucking the bikes in the car for an Esplande run sounds like a great idea as he's a bit used to cycling the Torrens.
Brilliant idea to organize some parent/child fun rides however weekends are typically not my best as I work, but Sunday arvos usually are just fine - hint hint...

Permalink Reply by Don (Who's lost?) Nairn on February 14, 2012 at 22:18 My thoughts would be a flattish ride of about 10 Km with a few potential stops on the way.
Somthing like parent and child and child's friend if they have a friend that is keen.
the only issue may be that the maintenance on many kids bikes is nonexistent.
My sons friend MTB the front derailleur was out of adjustment there was less than 10 psi in the tires and the chain needed some oil. He noticed the difference once this was sorted out.
at least I has serviced this bike a few months ago and it was easy to sort out.
It seems that being able to service a bike is a skill so rare that it is nearly considered a superpower by some kids

Permalink Reply by richard 1473 on February 15, 2012 at 9:17 I take my 9 year old daughter from semaphore south to north haven and back, a good ride totally on a shared path ,we also do the playground crawl along the same route ! it seems she wants to have a go on every playground along the way, works out around a 14k round trip with at least 6 playground stops (she just has to try all the equipment out) the day costs me around $3.00 for an ice-cream good value in my book
