Increase in Cyclist crashes 2000 to 2009 - 87% increase in SA

Some interesting stats here

http://www.aihw.gov.au/publication-detail/?id=10737421993

The rate of cases involving pedal cyclists shows an average annual rate of increase of 6.8%. For both males and females in age groups 25–44 years, 45–64 years as well as for males aged 65 years and over, there were significant increases in age-specific rates over the 9-year period. The largest average annual increase in rates for males and females was recorded for those aged 45–64 years with increases of 14.0% for males and 14.4% for females.

In a thread about an increase in pedestrian and cyclist injuries wouldn't that be in poor taste? Something akin to having a debate about semantics in a thread about a cyclist betting injured in a traffic incident? Anyway what is the point? We all wear helmets, more cyclists are being injured, the subject is moot.

I believe here lies the problem...

In Adelaide, the number of cars driven to work increased by 91,217, or 40%, between 1976 and

2006, but the total number of workers travelling on census day only grew by 15%. Adelaide has had

the second-biggest rise in the share of workers driving after Melbourne, but because it started with a

higher rate in 1976, Adelaide now has the highest mode share for car driving of any capital city, at

75.4%. Since 1976, 63% of the growth in car numbers in Adelaide was due to mode shift.

Doddsy, would you add your reference and link please?

Oh no, i was trying not to talk about helmets on this thread,

It comes from a foam doam study.

So a reference to 9/11 is okay? Just as long as I know the boundaries of good taste now.

You seem to have a monomania, why the fixation? Do you suffer from other pathologies?

The cyclist numbers were not released in 2002. It seems that there is no good reason not to release them. The links I provided are to what I consider sheer lunacy equating cyclists with terrorists. So the 9/11 reference is apt. Even if my post is not entirely appropriate and was tongue in cheek.

As to your playing the game of posting in every thread about why there isn't a discussion on helmets - well each to their own - maybe you find little things amusing. But in a thread about an increase in cyclist injury rates, in a country where it is mandatory to wear helmets, then playing your game in this thread is entirely inappropriate.

that's a paddlin

Come on!

There fixed that!

:)

rossmg, minimal consolation if most drivers are careful if you are a cyclist hit and left with permanent injuries.

Official SA data confirms that cyclists are safer road users than drivers.

Thanks Heather, I had not carefully read your post above regarding that more cyclists are involved in crashes compared to the increase in cycling - oops. I deleted the comment.

Still, the vast majority of motorists are careful and considerate, but yeah - only takes one to spoil your day :-/

There's still a problem with careful motorists: They are driving a car.
