Ride Summary
Juz was spot on the money. It was a very cold start to the Gawler Wheelers ride this morning. However we knew that it was going to be a fine day and we had an excellent turn-out of 33 riders.
Four newbies joined us today. They included well known AC member Dahondude, and Greg, both very experienced riders. John and Scott also joined us for their ever first group ride and we are sure they learned a lot from the experience. Welcome to all of the newbies, we look forward to seeing you on future rides and also to your comments about today’s GW adventure!
Michael, one of the GW regulars, celebrated his 45th birthday today…HAPPY BIRTHDAY MICHAEL!! Actually he nearly missed the start of the ride and we look forward to his full explanation as to why this was so…..(or should we ask his wife Cheryl???). It was also great to have GW regular “JB” back with us after a month off the bike due to illness. Welcome back JB…..and you better tell us about that bike you were riding today!! He purchased it off eBay for $370 and he was still towards the front of the pack for most of the ride.
We always love riding GW Route04 and today was no exception. The cheeky first 20km leg always is a mental game due to its length, never ending incline and the headwind which seems to always be there. What we love though is that we know that once we get to Freeling the hardest part of the ride is all over red rover!
By the time we got to Freeling the sun was out and we enjoyed a very sociable regroup stop whilst we waited for all of the riders. The real fun started on the leg to Wasleys. It had warmed up and the wind was in our favour resulting in a super-fast leg with speeds well over 35kph. The final leg back to Gawler was similar and it will be interesting to hear from the riders re individual total ave speeds for the ride.
Back at Jaspers it was a hive of activity as everyone discussed the ride. We were also very busy distributing the newly arrived GW Bibnicks and Knicks. It was really nice to see many non-riders drop in to Jaspers to say hi ...(John you had better tell us about your trip)
We saw a prime example today of what makes the Gawler Wheelers such a special group (in our view). Scott, being new to group riding, wore his jeans today for the ride. One of the group suggested that we all toss in a gold coin and give Scott a free Bibnicks…which we did in no time. Well done all and thanks to Greg for organizing it.
ANOTHER BRILLIANT AND MOST ENJOYABLE GW RIDE!! WE SHOULD PUT A RING ON IT!! More details will be posted on today’s ride over the next few days by those who participated so keep checking back to this report for the real juicy stuff!
NEXT WEEK: We will be holding two concurrent rides ….a HILLS ride and a FLAT ride. Details will be posted on AC Events soon and YOU are welcome to join in the fun.
BIRTHDAY BOY MICHAEL: Mate at significant expense we arranged for BEYONCE to send you a birthday greeting…you will see that later. In exchange we had to promise that we would give one of her biggest selling singles a plug on AC. This single has gone quadruple platinum having sold over 4 million copies, and the video has been viewed more that 186 million times world-wide. I am a huge fan…she is such a fabulous singer, dancer and live performer. ENJOY!

They're pretty on the ball. Chest pain or heart problems get you express entry.

Permalink Reply by Scott Davis on July 7, 2012 at 19:57 I enjoyed my morning riding with you all. Thank you for stretching my range to the north and thanks for the bibknicks so I can look the part on future rides. Unfortunately as a few have noted, I will need to replace at least one tyre before I ride anywhere again.
@Mark H - sorry I didn't notice you had a puncture as we left Freeling. I wondered why I wasn't getting caught up by your group on that leg.
Speeds: I think I touched about 43km/h coming down into Wasleys (fastest segment recorded on my GPS is 38km/h). I held about 15 km/h up the Thiele Highway towards Freeling. Thanks to the patient riders who stayed with me and chatted.
Leanne came to my rescue in about 25 minutes after my tyre died, so I got back to Jaspers in time to enjoy coffee with most of you too.
Cheers.
Permalink Reply by Dahondude on July 7, 2012 at 20:58 Nice to meet everyone today and I had a great ride on a route I'd not normally have chosen. Thanks to Juz for giving me a lift to Gawler, much nicer than the train. Incredibly cold in the wind before the start but the push up to Freeling into the headwind soon warmed me up, helped by JB and Wilson sharing turns. I took a short video long this section -
Thankfully the sun came up and provided some welcome warmth at Freeling.
Freeling to Wasleys was incredibly fast - Dale down on his tri-bars with 6 of us pedalling as hard as we could to keep up...jeepers I think I hit 57 km/h and that was on the flat!
Wasleys back to Gawler I was chasing the lead group, getting close but never catching them.
Really nice to ride somewhere new and visit small country towns with their pubs and old houses, resplendent in winter sun.
A great ride with a great bunch of people. I averaged 33 km/h but apart from the section up to Freeling I was sitting on 35-45 km/h most of the time. Nice to see a bunch of new people and bikes (that ebay steel frame was a ripper!) and as a newbie I'd strongly recommend everyone, no matter what your cycling ability, to head up and check it out. I had a blast! Thanks to everyone for your friendly welcome.
I'll definitely be back - especially for some of those Barossa Hills routes.

Permalink Reply by Frank (GW) on July 8, 2012 at 8:35 Sunday morning 7.30am - Terry Update
Hi all. Just fyi I have just called the hopsital and spoken to Terry. In good sprits although didn't sleep much as they kept waking him up during the night. Heart beat/ryhthm still not quite 100% so they will still keep him under observation for next few hours. I will check in later today and provide a further update later. (From something he said I think he is looking at the Ride Report on his mobile so feel free to send him a cheerio.)
Regards
Permalink Reply by Lee Bakes on July 8, 2012 at 8:51 I had a message from Terry last night stating that his heart rate had returned to 100 bpm at rest. He also told me that if the top half of his heart does not stop DE-fibrillating by morning then they will put him under and "zap" him with defibrillators.
If you are reading this mate, I hope you are OK. I have a few chores to do, but hopefully I will be able to come in today at some stage and see you.
Permalink Reply by Lee Bakes on July 8, 2012 at 9:14 Sunday morning 8:10 am - Terry Update.Terry has just informed me that his heart rate hovered around 90-100 bpm last night, but has spiked this morning to 137 bpm. The staff at the LMH are treating him with medication to lower his heart rate as we speak and he is not at this stage allowed to have anything to eat...
He has just informed me that they are going to "put him under" to "shock" his heart.
Permalink Reply by Warren Porteous on July 8, 2012 at 10:59 Been watching closely Terry and semd our best wishes, I hope the treatment gets results soon. Get well quick, Warren & Scott Porteous
