I stupidly decided to delay my order of new chamois cream from Wiggle, thinking that even if I run out I won't notice a big difference. I ran out yesterday and I sure did notice! I just didn't feel as comfortable on the saddle without it. So now I have to wait until my new cream arrives.
In the meantime, does anyone use some kind of homemade chamois cream?

Wouldn't this info also be available at a pharmacy

For instance sun creams are tested and while they are labeled SPF 30+
However some sun creams when tested are over SPF 45+
as I understand it is possible to make suncream that is SPF 55+
It would seem likely that the laboratory that does the testing would have this information.
I wrote to my local member of parliament (i live in Boothby) and asked why this information was not made available to consumers.
My logic would be that if consumers know that product A is inferior to product B that people who want maximum protection will buy the better product and also if some expensive products do not perform people will stop buying them.
The current labeling system encourages manufacturers to make as cheap a product that passes the test rather than a better product that may cost a bit more.
Informed consumers make informed choices.
If people want to get the maximum sun protection should they be allowed to?
The politicians reply was that releasing this information would put the inferior products at a commercial disadvantage.
I did wonder, why this would be a problem?

Permalink Reply by Gemma B on April 18, 2012 at 9:23 water has an MSDS, and this statement always cracks me up: "To the best of our knowledge, the chemical, physical, and toxicological properties have not been thoroughly investigated."
There was also an outdated MSDS for water that stated if you got it in your eyes you were to immediately flush your eyes with... well... water :-)

These gloves must be carefully removed and they must be disposed of in accordance with applicable laws and laboratory practices. Then the hands must be washed with with soap and water!
I had no idea water was such a dangerous substance... must be more careful from now on...
excuse my ignorance please, but how come riders need to use these creams. is it everyone who rides for long stretches, or just the unlucky few whose skin doesnt like the rubbage? or just those who use the tighter clothing?
i dont cycle very far in any one sitting, but i've never had any soreness down there, except for a few ingrown hair issues on the insides of my legs(motorbike though) if i've not been riding for a couple of months and then jump back into it.
Permalink Reply by Don (Who's lost?) Nairn on April 18, 2012 at 0:01 if you ride for several hours at a time several times a week it becomes more of an issue.
excuse my ignorance as well I ride between 300 - 400 kms a week and have also never needed chamois cream in fact when I first heard about it I thought it was a joke. I am not aware of any of my ride partners that use it either. I'm not meaning to criticise anyone that does by the way. Simon as I understand it - it's loose fitting clothing and more than one layer of clothing in the nether regions that tends to chafe and irritate that's why Lycra is so popular amongst road riders that stay on the saddle for so long unlike MTBers.
