Ride Summary:
We thought the Xmas Pageant might keep the numbers down, however 57 riders turned up for the Gawler Wheelers rides today. They included first time GW riders Bec, Kara, David, Robert, Paul and Gundi….welcome all to the GW family.
This week we tried something a little different. We had two HILLs groups riding the Menglers Hill route. There was the fast HILLs group who took off, never to be seen again until we got back to Jaspers!
We also had a “slow” HILLs group to enable those who have never attempted Menglers to do so at a less intimidating speed. GW Guru Wilson Devo did a fantastic job leading this group and under his leadership many can now say “Menglers…been there …done that”.
The UNDULATING group of 34 also rode the same route except they did not ride the Menglers leg. For many in this group it was the first time on Gomersal Road and it is quite a “hilly” road. We heard many say “I am so happy that I did not have to get off the bike on Gomersal”.
For all groups it was a fairly tough morning. Hills a plenty, then it warmed up quickly and we had hot head-winds for the first 30kms. The ride tested many. We had punctures, we had people getting ill, it was a bit stop-start and no doubt we had people thinking “why am I doing this?”
However when everyone got back to Jaspers the pain was all forgotten. The comments were all about the achievements ...along the lines of “WOW…that was a fantastic ride for me… didn’t think I could do that!” Challenging and character building is probably the best way to describe the morning.
The Gawler Wheelers comradeship was best illustrated today by Ann, who is 61 years old. At 11.15am she said “I have to go and get lunch ready for my husband.” At 1.15pm she was still at Jaspers chatting to us!!!
NEXT WEEK: We will be holding two rides. One is a HILLS ride that will include the infamous Checkers Hill. The other is an easier, gentle UNDULATING ride to Freeling & Wasleys. YOU…are invited to attend...all are welcome. Details will be posted tomorrow on AC Events. ***Today’s photo gallery follows:

Permalink Reply by jess on November 13, 2011 at 19:02 ohhh okies didn't know that. thanks....i guess it will vary, but what's the usual distance for the rides?
Between 50 and 60KM, always with a tailend charlie who never passes the slowest rider so nobody gets left behind.
Darn it I am quite angry at myself, I had 3 punctures and felt sick so I have some unfinished business here. I'm going to do this route again some time in the next month including climbing Menglers Hill even if I have to do it alone. I'm sick of not being able to do these climbs.
Permalink Reply by Juz on November 13, 2011 at 17:12 Don't be angry at yourself when circumstance poops on your day (be cranky at circumstance, sure, but not yourself). We've seen you ascend other hills, your day on Menglers will come and you'll meet it head on. Hopefully we'll get to join you for it too! :-)
Thanks Juz, but I know I've done some silly things in recent weeks from eating the wrong things and not training enough or opting for softer rides. Everyone's got their limitations but I know I can do better and I know I've made some poor decisions!
I had 3 attempts at GS4, didn't get angry or even dissapointed with the first DNF's. Somedays are like that, going back and doing it alone works for me, you just ride within your comfort zone and you'll do it.

Permalink Reply by Robert Cannon on November 13, 2011 at 20:03 A big thanks to GW for a great morning, a thank you to Richard for the support while I got my bearings riding the new bike. To everyone on the ride thank you for the company and camaraderie. I've recovered from the ride (fair bit of soreness and legs still aching). I enjoyed the hills, next time I think I will try Menglers :D . The fast ride back to Gawler was a delight, I was certainly surprised to see 34ks (40-50 on the downhills) on some of the flatter sections mucho fun. I will definitely be back. Cheers.
Get those legs ready for Whispering Wall on the 20th!
