Ride Summary
We dedicated today’s GW ride to Queen Elizabeth in honour of her Diamond Jubilee, and Birthday.
A zero degree temperature greeted the 47 ride starters and many wished that they had the fur on that the Queen is wearing in the photo!
It was by far the coldest morning that we have experienced on our rides and it took a good hour before the rising temp provided some relief.
Our 87km ride today took us up the undulating Gomersal Road, through Tanunda, Nuriootpa, Angaston and Lyndoch. It was a bit of a stop/start affair and took us longer than usual due to factors such as:
Notwithstanding the above it was a nice leisurely ride and everyone was in a “long weekend” relaxed mood. We had plenty of time to chat at the stops which is important to us as the social aspect of our rides is what we value the most. We also had the pleasure today of welcoming GW newbies James and Shane.
In addition to celebrating the Queen’s birthday we also celebrated the birthday of Terry, a GW regular. Terry’s partner, Christene, was waiting for us at Jaspers with a superb birthday cake which was decorated with a photo of Terry’s bike. Happy birthday Terry!
NEXT WEEK: We will be holding one FLAT 60km ride via the Stuart O’Grady Bikeway. Details will be posted on AC Events soon and YOU are very welcome to come along.
Before we move to today’s ride photo’s we leave you with the QUEEN song, “Bicycle Race”, and a Flash Mob putting on a live unexpected performance at the Brussels Central Station:

Does the trick and never feel the cold on the road. Will be doing the same if it's zero degrees on any more of our Sat rides. PS how did you and Kate go on the Reisling Trail ride yesterday? Cheers

Permalink Reply by Juz on June 13, 2012 at 23:03 I'm with you Barry re this being a favourite route. It's got it all, undulations, scenery, distance and the opportunity for a challenge if your legs aren't too frozen to turn over. :-)
I love Gomersal Rd and I love the Angaston Bike path. Next time, who's with me in chucking a left at Angaston and going up over the back of Menglers?
Permalink Reply by Keith Davies on June 14, 2012 at 9:08 Count me in on that one Juz, Dave L nearly took the turn up the front of Menglers last Saturday but resisted temptation.
Permalink Reply by Barry Norsworthy on June 14, 2012 at 9:11 count me in too Juz. Perhaps another pretty bridge to be found ? LOL
Permalink Reply by Juz on June 14, 2012 at 17:01 Next time this route crops up, we'll look at options and discuss with our illustrious leaders. :-)
Permalink Reply by Keith Davies on June 13, 2012 at 9:28 Did someone say it was cold ! Must be the understatement of the year. This is a great route so another top day out with the Wheelers.
Apologies to Gundi, when he needed a wheel, I couldn't keep up on the stretch into Gawler.
Great bike Frank, you picked the right time for that deal, good onya.
Christene, great job with Terry's birthday cake, might slow him down for the next ride.
Permalink Reply by Gundi hahn on June 13, 2012 at 20:45 Apologies not required Keith, I had ran out of snacks so I thought the sooner I get to Jasper's the better. Would have got there sooner with you though, but no drama.
Permalink Reply by terry heney on June 14, 2012 at 23:37 Still eating it.. Damn it's a BIG cake....As far as slowing me down for this Sat? hmmm have options..1..if Christene does attend this ride then I probably will stick with her and ride with Gully Grinders on Sunday..2. If she isnt attending then maybe go for broke..3..take it easy on my own and then Sunday attend Gully Grinders ... BUT ofcourse this also depends how my legs feel Sunday morning..4. not attend ANY of the groups rides due to WEATHER conditions and have a decent sleep in for a change :)
Permalink Reply by Craig on June 13, 2012 at 22:41 Tried a short warm up ride around Gawler after the downhill coast from home increased the freezing temperatures but still arrived at Jaspers with frozen fingers...I should have worn the gloves with fingers! Its a great ride along Gomersal and alot easier than a year ago although that last climb is still hard.
Good to see so many GWs attending which shows how popular this route is. The bike track to Angaston is tricky with all the barriers and I almost cleaned up the last one as I was too close to Doug and forgot it was there. Great run back from Angaston and Tanunda but was getting low on gas into Gawler.
Missed the cake Terry but it looks great on the photos! Great ride and great company again.
Cheers to us and the Queen.
