Helmet Laws Stifle City Riders
Now i know it is smart to wear a helmet riding down Portrush Rd in heavy traffic, or tearing down from Mt Lofty on a race bike, but if i want to ride down to the local deli on my old school pushy or roll up and down Rundle St letting latte sipping hipsters admire my flowing locks, then i believe it should be ok to go sans helm. After riding all over Europe last summer i grew accustomed to riding with no helmet, and i never felt my life was in grave danger. If the roads of London became too scary i just got off and walked my bike till things calmed down or i could find another (quieter) route. I think minors should be made to wear helmets, but as a adult member of a free society i am quite capable of deciding when and when not to take my helmet on a ride. This topic has probably surfaced quite a bit on these forums but it needs to be discussed again as a progression for change.

We'll start with discussing the need for a grocer's apostrophe in your title. Is it necessary? Is it safe? Will you be vilified for free spelling?
As for the helmet issue, when you live in a area do as the local laws say or take the consequences. If you want to change the law, stand for parliament under the "I don't mind my brains smeared all over the pavement as it's my choice" party ticket.

A hollowed out Kitchener bun...makes a great helmet and at the end of the ride you can eat it.

Might break out into a pie fight too. OOHH yeah!!, throw a pie my way just make sure it is a curry one from Meadows. Are pastries and custard tarts in the 'bun' classification (personally I don't think so but maybe we should do some research on the matter - perhaps we should start up a Bunnies sub-group to the Muddies franchise).

I have now corrected the title, thanks for bringing that to my attention in such a comical fashion. I appreciate your input and totally understand your point of view. Maybe a good compromise for you would be a relaxing of the helmet laws just within the city and parkland areas? This would encourage people to cycle more in the city limits and allow short term rental stations (like Melbourne bike share system) to be used by locals and tourists visiting our beautiful city, without the need to carry a helmet around all day. Perhaps a reduction of the speed limits for motor vehicles in the city and parkland areas to 40 kmph and the addition of more bike lanes will help make our city one of the most progressive and bike friendly cites in Australia.

What was the point of this comment? Last time I checked, self-harm wasn't illegal. Freedom of choice, including the freedom to do things which might increase the chances of hurting yourself (or might not, the jury is still technically out on this one) is the cornerstone of any 'free' society.

Anyone else but me get annoyed that my taxes go to pay for people's health problems that are preventable or due to their neglect?
Or that genuinely useful projects that benefit the general population are unable to be funded because too much money is wasted on people that should follow Darwins theory? -
