Grenfell Street bus lane - but what about the bikes? Epilogue

So the government is apparently going to make the left hand lane in Grenfell/Currie a dedicated bus lane. From the story in the Advertiser and the animated "fly-over" it looks like there is no space allocated at all for cyclists. So I assume that means they are also going to turn Gawler Place south of Grenfell Street into a "cycles permitted 2-ways" street and maybe make Flinders Street or Pirie into a dedicated bike boulevard? Hey...did I just see some pigs flying past my office window??


Ok lots of people seem to completely missed the original point of my post and the discussion has descended in typical fashion to a bit of name calling and point scoring. Time to close it I think. My point was not to complain about the bus lane - I think it's a good idea and a potential solution to the problems of sharing for different modes of transport i.e. to privilege some forms of transport on some roads to discourage their use by other forms of transport. In that light my question was to ask "if they are going to privilege public transport on this road is there any chance they might privilege cycle transport somewhere else?" I am not convinced that sharing all spaces is the best solution for every situation and as I have commented I would prefer not to share the bus lane with buses and they probably don't want to share with us much either...

This to me is testing the water with improving access for busses at the expense of one less lane cars can travel in.  At least to start off with, it will be an inconvenience (or a little worse) for cyclists who use these streets.  We are use to inconvenience (or worse).  Shifting the balance in improving public transport in relation to travelling by cars (particularly one-person trips) is a step in the right direction.   However I would like to see the move accompanied by removing some on-street parking (more so in Pirie-Waymouth from Morphett to Pulteney Streets for example).  Keep some loading zones is likely.

At the moment they need to play politics, especially when it involves the protected species (private motor vehicles).

Every time they implement some form of infrastructure like bus lanes or cycleways, they need to minimise the impact on motorists by doing things like increasing carparks on side streets and lowering the price of off street parking.

Whenever there is any change, lots of folks write and blog and post and whine but after a while when we are used to it, it just becomes normal.

 

This pathetic Labor(communist) goverment has done so much damage to this country already, they do not even have the balls to simply change a bit of traffic flow without weeks of public consultation.

Just do it, folks that dont like it, stop using this corridor for a thoroughfare and or use alternate route.

Big deal, get over it and lets get a ballsy government in that can wake this sleepy hollow and move us into the next century.

I am not going to stay up wondering what if the city changes some lanes to Bus/Taxi only lanes.

Move On, Nuff said?

Your post is a contradiction. The Labor government have done a few things without proper consultation and that is why so many people started hating them (that and the right media). Yet you want a government who does just that with bike lanes? Pfft...please.

And you clearly have not idea what communism is. Either that or you regularly read The Australian or Adelaide Now and can't think for yourself.

Have experienced a communist government 1st hand in both China and the former east Germany champ!
Labor has made some back flips like they always do, changing some lanes big deal!
Move on and just do it!

Adelaideans are the best whingers! Well, at least we agree on that one!

Now please vote this current left wing/communist leadership out and get this place rocking again! Perhaps we will get overseas visitor numbers back up and kick some union butt!

Labors been in power for 10 years. Thats because people vote for them. Leadership always switches between the two major parties eventually.

The problem is not with said political party, the problem is with the voters that always vote for the same  major party (s).

Labor and Liberal don't need to do their Job properly. When the time is right they'll make a bunch of irresponsible promises that appeal to the uneducated majority of swing voters and they'll get into power again.

Wow, pretty disappointing to see the comments here... only marginally better than those on Adelaide Now.

This is good news. This is a start to changing excessive car lanes around the city and then eventually arterial roads. As it has been pointed out, bus lanes are for cyclists too. If you're concerned about whether you can use them, write to Yarwood or the ACC. Adelaidians are the best whingers.
