Anyone else notice how very little about the current Giro is on the news!
One of the biggest events on the cycling calendar and we hear Jack.
I realise it's on SBS2.

Permalink Reply by Derek Hasel on May 17, 2012 at 11:21 Frank I have given up watching Commercial TV. It appears to cater for nothing but 'Foody'. Television these days seems to cater for the lowest common denominator. And I can not abide 'Foody'. The AFL must be laughing all the way to the Bank with their strategy of sucking in the mugs ! (just my opinion, of course) anyway Thankfully I have FOX and can record the Giro and watch it the next morning, go for a ride and then watch the ToC. Both races will now start to become a little more interesting now that the 'Hills'; are appearing on the horizon. Vive le Giro, Vive le Tour.
I do record also and watch later but what I find hard to believe is that its hardly in the paper, on Google news or much else.
Footy(cross country wrestling) does not do it for me either, I am a Soccer(Fussball) fan as that is what I grew up with and thankfully, its one the rise here finally.
Anyhow, its just an observation that the news has blanked it out pretty much as cycling seems to have gripped this nation by the balls so to speak.
Permalink Reply by Derek Hasel on May 17, 2012 at 11:39 I am of the belief that the AFL have most Newpaper and TV Sports Editors/Presenters in their pocket. A freee trip here and a late lunch there just so they suck the punter in and 'persuade' these journo's to make it bigger than it is. After all if people were so interested in Ozzie Rules they would go to the local games and those games and Clubs would receive the same coverage in the Press. Big Business at it's worst !
Permalink Reply by Sean Carnie on May 17, 2012 at 12:49 Happy to agree with you Frank on this one, got GIRO coverage on the weekend and then it cut off, not again until next weekend, looks like we sign up for Fox or miss out!
I think SBS are doing their best so lets hope it continues to improve.
I have been enjoying watching the SBS coverage even though it is short and sharp coverage at the moment. It is interesting to see the tactics and luck. Its said to say with Green Edge doing so well for the sprinters jersey there isnt more coverage on the news. I believe some of the coverage goes live soon on SBS.
Permalink Reply by Konadog on May 17, 2012 at 14:32 Go Canada! Ryder Hesjedal is from my home town :) This is a big deal in Canada as we aren't known for great road cyclists.
Kona should'nt that be Go Canada Eh! I stir my Canuckian (Toronto) Godfather all the time about that trait.
Permalink Reply by Simon Lownsborough on May 17, 2012 at 15:06 WTF? All these years and I thought that sport = footy. Now you tell me there's other sports?
Mainstream TV is stuck on a fictional demographic propagated by Singleton in the 80s. Pity they havn't woken up that that was 30 years ago - and incorrect even then.
Permalink Reply by Shav Bird on May 17, 2012 at 20:16 What I find annoying is that footy is on not only 'free to air' but also on 2 channel on the sports section on foxtel as well as a dedicated footy channel. Its not like we dont get enough football in our lives but half a dozen channels combined as well as replays, highlights and news reports is just flooding and taking priority over other sports everywhere regardless if you like it or not. I understand its popular among those who like it, but your a limited minority if you dont like it, and rarely get a say.
Thank god for Eurosport, ESPN and SBS for giving us something different for a change.
Can anybody explain all the different categories in this Race. I know the Maglia Rosa, The Maglia Azzurra etc but what is the TV indicatore, the Premio della Fugo and the difference between the fast team and super team. Cheers
Can I also add that there is a lot of footy on the teev and it's prime time. You have to be reasonably fanatical to stay up into the early hours to watch bike racing and lets face it some of the stages go for five hours and the only exciting bit is when Ferrari brings down the main opposition in sight of the finishing line. Sometimes the best bits are the travel logue scenery and chateau bits. I don't think there is much of a market in replaying anymore than half an hours highlights almost 24 hours later. SBS are showing the stages live on the weekend because that is when they will get most of the audience to watch it was not long ago that we got no coverage of the Vuelta or Giro and only highlights of Le Tour so things are improving. At least you can watch the Tour of California live at Breakfast time.
Oh Yeah and Go The Crows.

Is this because this is the only prey they can catch?
I think I would prefer a Nana nap than watch football.
