On an indoor session, I turn my GPS module off. Garmin gives me speed but not distance. I have checked that the wheel circumference has been entered but I do not understand why I get speed but not distance. Any ideas?

The second problem I have is with the heart rate monitor which simply does not give me a heart rate reading. Most of the time there is no read out and occasionally it gives the most bizarre low readings! when I feel I am in the red my heart rate monitor tells me I have 72 bpm! The monitor pads are certainly moist, correctly orientated and I have tried adjusting the position of the pads on my chest. It happens whether I am wearing a cotton t shirt or synthetic cycling top. I have checked the battery which is sitting at 2.9v. All to no avail.

Any thoughts?

I think what you are doing is right. Sounds like a warranty issue to me. Can you try pairing your HR strap to another device to work out if it is the sensor or the Edge unit.

As for distance, not sure. Do you start the timer?
Bad news Simon, you're dead, your family's just too polite to tell you.

Thanks, confirms my suspicions.,

My 500 distance display doesnt update sometimes while on the trainer. I just stop it and reset to zero and it usually comes right.

First question, why turn the GPS module off , if its because of Strava then use the security features with in strava to hide your position. Assuming you have installed the cadence / speed sensor try the following Go to settings, bike settings, bike profiles, bike no, wheel size & recheck (custom probaly 2096mm), back, ant + speed/cadence,(bike sensors should say "yes", if you clickon sensor details it will display sensor ID's, if not rescan next to the bike. i leave the GPS on and the unit will switch automatically from GPS mode to the sensors when they are detected

With regard to heart rate monitor, i always have the strap on before turning garmin 800 on, that way i always see the connection between the unit and heart rate monitor, (a screen pops up showing connection)

also you said you have checked battery, have you checked both, speed/cadence sensor & heart rate, need to check both, they are linked.

Otherwise as Gus says sounds like a warranty issue, nothing more frustrating

Thanks Brett, tried again on Sunday without turning GPS off and worked fine.   Simple things often work wonders and as I have been so used to "auto start" with the GPS turned on that I hadnt manually started the timer. Using this useful button on my lastest indoor session provided me with the distance measurement I had been missing!!!

WRT heart rate,  I followed DC Rainmakers advice and connected the Garmin transponder to the Polar "Wearlink" strap and Hey Presto!  heart rate readings as well!!
