Hi All, so I've got an old Garmin 305 Edge which is getting a bit screwy. Thinking of replacing it with the 500.

I have 2 main beefs which I'm hoping will be resolved by upgrading...

1. 305 dies/locks up after being plugged into a computer OR if charged for too long (this happens semi-frequently).

It could be mostly charged and I plug it in to sync, then the next time I go to use it it's totally dead. I end up having to do a soft reset, then carefully monitor it's charging so it doesn't 'overcook' itself and die/lock up again as a result. Reading on the web this seems a pretty common issue with the 305.

Hoping Garmin resolved this with the 500, thoughts?

2. Doesn't recognise the Duotrap speed/cadence sensor on Trek.

I know the Duotrap is working fine but the 305 refuses to connect. Tried everything. Does anyone have a successful 500/duotrap combo working?

Thanks all! Looks like there's some pretty good deals on Bike Exchange for the 500 head unit.

Ive been running a Garmin 500 for last 2 years and am fairly happy with it. Note Im using the Garmin cadence/speed amd heart rate sensors. There have been a few minor issues:

1. auto shutoff had to be disallowed as unit was shutting down mid ride. Not a big issue for me.

2. Initially I had issues updating firmware via my Mac laptop. This problem appears to have been fixed.

Thanks Martin:-)

Hey so what do you sync your garmin to on the Mac... I've been using Ascent, but am interested in what else is out there...

...Or does everyone just use Strava these days??

I log into the Garmin website....mainly to update firmware on the Edge and also on my Car GPS. I used to upload rides but I was so ashamed of my pathetic stats I stopped :(

:) Martin, I could relate to that, if I had a Garmin.

Hi Bexter,

Hello, I am not running a Gamin at all, Stava via android and Suunto HR moniter which I have been using for a couple of years. ( but too many issues in trying to link the data together!!)  I am also lookng in to trading up to a Garmin 500 let me know what you find out that would be great.....incidently Bike Express ( Halifax St) have a Garmin 500 bundle on their online store for about $350 at the moment

there was a thread around here recently about buying the edge 500, think it was Highly Tuned Athletes that had the bundle for close to, if not actually, $300
$300 is the ball park figure for the head unit....cadence and speed sensor and heart strap and the two mounts....please ensure you know what you are paying for when you are negotiating.....its a zoo out there
I've heard next week Super Elliott's have a special of $345 for the premium bundle pack, cheaper than BE online...
