Hi All
Do you remember the tragic accident at Kauri Parade Seacliff on Christmas day where a 42year old man was found unconscious in the road? Well, he was my husbands cousin, he leaves behind a beauiful wife and three gorgeous girls 6, 10 and 12.
I am asking if it would be possibe to do a fundraising bike ride to raise $700 to lease a memorial Bench at Somerton Park, where he lived. $800 was raised by family and friends at a BBQ.

Sounds like a good cause. I look forward to riding and making and raising some donations.

Permalink Reply by Gus K on April 12, 2012 at 21:52 I'm sorry for your family's loss. I know there are members on here who knew him.
This might be as good a time as any to announce my intention to host an Adelaide Cyclists winter group ride series and I am sure we could do a whip around on the first one for gold coin donations and more.
My idea is a group ride on Sundays 13 May, 10 June, 8 July, 12 August, 16 Sept & 14 October more to come.
Hi Gus
Thanks for your reply, your intention sounds fantastic, it is lovely to hear that so many people care. This bench will be a great place for all to reflect memories of such a great guy.

This sounds like a worthy cause that fellow cyclists could get behind. I keep thinking how easily this could've been me...same age with a young family.
I think the idea of linking the fundraiser into an existing ride is the way to go. There are so many group rides on now that it is hard to find space for more rides.
Another option to the rides that Gus is planning, might be to try and link it in with the next BikeSA Grand Slam at Yankalilla. Approach BikeSA and see if you can put a call out for donations at that ride. If they agree, then do some more promotions on this site and also see if BikeSA will promote it through there email newsletter. It would then require a couple of people to get down to Yankalilla with some collection tins. About 500 people do the grand slams, so only a dollar or two each and you are there.
Hi Don
Thanks for your support, did you know Alan? Your suggestions are really useful, I will speak to Carole next week and tell her that several people are interested in doing a ride. I am sure she will be delighted. Looks like they have done the base for the bench at the reserve, it is a lovely busy place, lots of families enjoying the equipment and space.
I have just come out of hospital after two major operations, so feel a bit hands tied at the moment physically, but thought I would put out a taster call for help for the fundraiser, to see if people were willing to support the cause
Thanks Helen
Hi All
Thanks for your interest, I have spoken to his wife and he would be delighted for some more fundraising to be done re: this cause. The bench is now in place, but there are no plaques on it yet, it is in a lovely spot and they are going to make a garden area around it soon.
