We have lots of talk on here about going up hills but what about down.
I have been up the Old Freeway couple of times now and ridden of into the distance. But on the way up plenty of riders going down and I thought must be a great descent.
One of my faves is Alexander ave in Galwer long and straight.
Some are just downright scary like checkers with that right angle at the bottom. And of course road behind Para Wirra, Galwer Wheelers know what i mean.
So what are your faves and what are you riding the brakes down.

You ended up going up lots of these so called famous hills but always seems to be on long rides, must plan to do these hills in reverse. Thats how ended up going down Checkers.
I don't mind the top half of the descent down the freeway, the bit done on the road. It's reasonably fast and the corners can be taken flat out if you get your lines right, however the bits on the bikeway are just scarey at times, particularly when you get people going up while focused about 5cm in front of their front wheel.

Permalink Reply by Paul on February 29, 2012 at 9:55 Sheoak rd from Crafers/Stlg to Belair - nice combination of up & down, despite some rather rudely positioned slow points, and a hefty 20% decline with a handy bend that makes oncoming traffic somewhat interesting... easily hit 50mph in old measure, and it is hairy! Testing climb up same in other direction!
Sturt Valley road from Stirling to Hawthorndene is good for both scenery, winding roads, and pace.
Greenhill down from Uraidla to Beaumont is fantastic, sweeping bends at good pace and view worth stopping and checking out. Almost annoying, that.
On the fats, I enjoy the queens jubilee and ballast pit tracks, in fact most of the tracks through Belair National Park rock - there is something for everyone in there, up and down.
Permalink Reply by Sam Young on February 29, 2012 at 12:53 Down Pound can be pretty scary/fast, and you're rewarded with a climb up little Italy afterwards. I'm also a fan of Greenhill road, and Lobethal into Basket Range
Much prefer Old Nortons over new even if you do encounter a little traffic on the way down, I find the surface much nicer.
Other faves are the aforemention Lobethal to Basket Range, Montecute & Greenhill as well as Belair Rd.
Permalink Reply by Sportsbeer on February 29, 2012 at 13:40 Aldgate Valley, Montacute, Morgan Road, Scott Creek Road from Heathfield, Bulls Creek Road, Macclesfield into Strathalbyn, Wickhams Hill, Pennys Hill, Deviation Road, then either right or left. Corkscrew, Checkers.
There are hundreds of them! One rule though, thou shalt not descend without ascending. Prior or post not relevant.

best descent would be coming down mount buffalo after the alpine classic, couldnt stop smiling - no more hills!
