Hi all, I am finally looking to upgrade from my flat bar road. I am considering a Specialized Roubaix Comp Compact but trying to work out if the extra $400 for Shimano 105 group and Fulcrum Racing 6 wheels is worth it, or will I be happy enough with the SRAM Apex with Mavic CXP22’s. Now I know it’s a matter of personal choice, but would appreciate all you knowledgeable folk out there who may have used both me know pros and cons or things to be aware of.

105 instead of Tiagra? Definitely worth it.

Can't say for the Apex, but the 105 I have on my avanti doesn't quite shift as snappily as the tiagra I have.

Advice would be to test ride both, or at least have a bike on the stand that you can play with, up and down the gears. Find which one feels best for you.

From reading a couple of reviews of Apex it sounds like you will be quite happy with it. However it does sound like you may want to spend the $400 that you save on a better set of wheels, the Mavic's don't sound too good. You might be able to get the LBS to swap them out as part of the transaction to end up with something better.
i love my fulcrums well worth the money i say
I have two sets of the fulcrum 5 wheels and think that they are fantastic. They roll well and stay true longer than previous wheelsets I've had. Can't vouch for the 6's though.
+ 1 for Fulcrum 5's so far so good
yep pay the extra money wheels make a biggggggggggggggggg diff
+1 on the Fulcrum 5's took me a while to deceide either 7's or 5's. Great wheels and the Conti GP's top them off perfectly, so much trouble with the original wheels.
Thanks all for your info, thoughts and 2 cents. Certainly will be trying to get a test ride on both. Will check with the LBS on wheel options and see what I can negotiate with them.
Yes. The time of purchase is the time to make changes - you'll always get discounts and depending on the part being replaced, they may be able to put it back into stock as new leading to even more savings.
you may not know but the wheels are made by a large Italian company (with an equally large name) starting with C. They started Fulcrum as to not 'pollute' their brand.

P.S. From what I've seen, the Roubaix is a great bike. Excellent road endurance geometry. Lovely.

I've never ridden one, just ridden with them!
