The purpose of this discussion is to determine what possible interest there might be for regular bunch road cycling within the Gawler area e.g the traditional Saturday morning bunch ride.

There seems to be an increasing number of cyclists in and around Gawler, mostly riding solo.

Roads such as Alexander Ave, Kentish Rd, Medlow Rd, Toolunger Rd, Gawler-One Tree Hill Rd, One Tree Hill-Kersbrook Rd, Humbug Scrub Road and the Stuart O'Grady Bikeway (Northern Expressway), just to name a few, provide a relatively unique choice of easily accessible hills and flats within the local area.

A bunch ride on Tuesday/Saturday mornings starting from Jaspers Brasserie/Starplex has existed for some time but attendance seems to be quite varied.

The PALS Cycling Group, based at Mawson Lakes, seems to be a well organised and regular bunch riding group. A bunch riding group modeled on the PALS group, perhaps, could be a starting point for a Gawler based group.

The name “Gawler Wheelers” was chosen to provide at least a point of reference for any possible interest there might be out there. At this stage there is no such group of riders. It is just a name only.

• So, is there any interest out there ?
• Is someone organising regular bunch rides already in the Gawler area ?
• Any suggestions for various cycling routes around Gawler ?

If enough interest develops then a great bunch ride might be the result.
There’s plenty of good cycling weather still to come !

Riding on a snooker table.

You've got balls.

Hi Everyone,

Thanks very much for the interest so far about "Cycling in Gawler".

I will be announcing a ride event (first bunch ride) soon and it will
be most suitable for those that live in the Gawler area as it will be
a ride starting in Gawler and finishing in Gawler, but since Gawler
is easily accessible by train then people on the "other side" could
also attend.

I will also put a route map up on one of the "MapMyRIDE" style of
websites.

I'll also send out an email to people who have already emailed me.

Thanks again and keep posted - GW

Look forward to it.
Note the first train on a weekend leaves Adelaide at 6:48am and doesn't get to Evanston station (which would be the closest station to the start point) until 7:40am so if you want to make it accessible to anyone who would use the train then it would probably be better with an 8am start.

Had a good turn out this morning for the inaugural Gawler Wheelers ride. I finally decided to attend a group ride and 10K from the end I pulled a spoke out of the back rim. Thankfully my wife was home and brought out the service vehicle to take me home (red faced; I may have let out a few expletives).

A quick trip into the LBS and I have a new set of wheels to keep me rolling.

Hi Ian. Great to hear that you got it sorted.  I thought that is was a good turn out for the first group ride. It's on again tomorrow (Sunday) if you are interested. Mark and I are definate starters.
I did have a great morning ride with the group so I will be back tomorrow morning. This time I will try to make the coffee at the end.

Leanne enjoyed the ride. I got to read the paper! The crank somehow got loose and then broke a little plastic clip in the crank under pressure. Thanks to JT Cycles at Elizabeth and I am good to go again.

See you guys again in three weeks. Son has cricket for two more saturdays.

Great to meet everyone also.

Michael

That was a bummer Michael, but we did take good care of Leanne in your absence. By the way we are doing the same ride again this morning (Sunday) at 7.30 if you are hanging out for it....full details via the links in the GW post below....cheers.

Special thanks also to Mark who initiated the GW group....see his summary below of yesterday's inaugural ride.

Good to meet you all for the first ride and everyone on a different brand bike, another first. Looking forward to next weekend ride, hopefully we can all get to the finish without any breakdowns.

conditions. No wind, no rain.
A introduction to group riding for some and another group ride for others.
A blown crank and a busted spoke was a testament to the power of some members
of the Gawler Wheelers peloton.
Coffee at Jaspers Brasserie concluded the ride.

Summary
It was a case of the fearsome four who turned up for the followup ride to the Gawler Wheelers Inaugural Ride. Conditions were almost a repeat of the previous day including another rear wheel issue on the same bike, but this time just a puncture. A close encounter with Clive Palfrey's `Up the NEXY` group near the southern end of the Stuart O`Grady Bikeway enabled plans to be made to catch up for coffee back in Gawler.

We tried to catch Clive`s crew before they reached the Gawler end of the Bikeway on our return loop but alas not enough was left in the legs as they beat us to Jaspers Brasserie in Gawler. It was great to meet and greet and discuss our common flatlander ride.

See you on the next ride ! Spread the word. All welcome. Ride on - GW.
