Cycling event marshal hit by car

AN innocent bystander is in a critical condition after a two-car crash at Largs North this morning.

The Park Holme man, 65, was standing in a bicycle lane on Victoria Rd, about 9.45am, acting as a road marshall for a local cycling event. He was hit by a car that collided with another car at the intersection of Victoria Rd and Strathfield Tce.

The man was rushed to hospital with life-threatening injuries, while the drivers of the two cars - a man, 75, and a woman, 78 - escaped serious injury.

Major Crash Investigators are still examining the circumstances of the crash

Hope he recovers fully from this, sounds like he was in the wrong place at the wrong time. The marshalls do a great job keeping the riders safe.

Terrible news just released is that he has died. His name was Gordon Boehm and others would know more.

Cycling SA volunteers, and all volunteers for that matter do a great job keeping us safe so it's is terrible when one of them lose their life.

WOW how sad, it was only yesterday i went for a Ride to OH and back and was caught by the VLCC Training ride, ridding with this group of VLCC guys and gal. Very nice ppls and almost talked me into coming out for a ride/race today.

For those that didn't know Gordon - or what he did for the VLCC - Gordon was our regular volunteer traffic marshall who would stand for hours on the corner of Strathfield Terrace and Victoria Road at Largs North during races. His job was to stop traffic travelling north on Victoria road ensure that racing bunches have a safe left turn from Strathfield Terrace. I didn't matter if it was 40 degrees or 10 degrees, he stood there in his high-vis vest with his lollypop and made racing as safe as possible for everyone. While I wasn't there today, I've heard that it was a freak accident, in which Gordon was hit by a car that had just collided with another car. One of our other volunteers was only steps away from being hit too, and the whole incident happened in front of a bunch, just metres behind. As far as I knew Gordon, he wasn't ever a cyclist himself, just a friendly bloke who became involved with our club through his partner, Carlien, and grew to love the sport and giving his time for the club. And in a world where volunteers in clubs are harder and harder to find, Gordon was the epitome of selfless generosity. It's an enormous loss that will be felt very deeply by his family, friends, and the club.
