Adelaide Cyclists

Jim Woods

Congratulations BISA and Adelaide Cyclists on an excellent first podcast.

Thank very much for getting this podcast up and running, I`ve previously had to settle for Jack Thurstons` Bike show from the U.K.
At last some thing very relevent to all the wonderful possibilities we have here in Adelaide
The discussion with the Minister was great and very encouraging.
Thanks again!

Thanks chaps.. but I can't say it's a dab on Jack Thurston's The Bike Show. His program is excellent and in fact I am going to put a call into him for an interview sometime.

Also any ideas people have drop me a line and we can do it. Touring bikes Luke?

Cheers all.

This is great.

Ideas for some Podcasts:
1. interviewing people along route/start/finish of an organised ride eg BikeSA ride. Or, social riders at Glenelg / Crafers bikeway on the weekends - why do you ride?
2. input from bike shops - e.g. matt the mechanic from bikes 'r' us explains how best to change a tyre
3. interviews with the Amy Gillet foundation, MAC on their campaigns
4. fitness updates e.g Jim could do a regular segment on his quest to drop some kgs - the before and after
5. nutritionists - what / how much to eat/drink on an upcoming ride to stay healthy
6. ex pros - where are they now? or, a this is your life. i hear Stuey might be a candidate for this shortly
7. vodcast: bike polo
8. tech update. what's the latest & greatest or, what's something that people should be thinking about with the change of seasons e.g. lighting options for winter
9. kids & bikes - what options there are, best places to ride for families
10. segments from a cycling trip - if anyone is doing an epic ride
11. interviewing a popular cafe about the financial impact of cyclists on their bottom line... cibo makes a good profit out of us...
12. some positive stories about cycling & the environment
13. BUGs - what do they do, what achievements have they had?
14. The good old days - some retro gear & older cyclists on how it used to be
15. racing clubs. how to get into racing, what are the costs, the events and the options in Adelaide. Cycling SA
16. Celebrity cyclists e.g. Simon Bryant - being a Chef at the Hilton restaurant when cyclists are here for the TDU
17. trackside - what is track racing, local track heros, interviews with the SA pros e.g. Anna Meares
18. cycling for the disabled
19. what do other countries do? infrastructure being built & tested in other nations
20. media updates - websites, books, podcasts, commerical sites, local companies online with cycling-related material
21. trials - e.g. purchasing a lot of different of energy bars and rating them - get input over a few weeks from the website on what people like/dislike
22. local cycling routes
23. the fixed gear scene. some audio from one of the city night races
24. the BikeSA schools program - teaching bike safety

I'm a little bit bike crazy and could keep going with this for a long time!

Wow, some list. Thanks Amanda. I was also thinking of a 'meet the member.' How about you?

re:16. Celebrity cyclists e.g. Simon Bryant - being a Chef at the Hilton restaurant when cyclists are here for the TDU This is great but did you see in the papers he is quitting The Hilton. I did hear him during ABC Radio's coverage of the TDU and he had some interesting things to say. (Except he kept saying e-X-presso)

I should add that I have a pro recorder and microphone for use if anyone want to go it alone. There are some other ways of recording audio as well that if anyone wants to do something and send it in would work out OK. Needless to say the iPhone is quite a good recorder with the right app.

It was great to hear the podcast and understand that the time is nigh. This decade has been witness to a great mindset shift. The Minister spoke of a paradigm shift, if we were to think of attitudes 10 years ago within Government, Michael Atkinson was the identifiable individual with a penchant for the bicycle, as a commuting cyclist. Now we have Pat Conlon & Jay Weatherill? (Michael Wright also appears extremely fit) as Senior Members of State Government that have a real understanding of the benefits and struggles of being a cyclist. (Is it true that the Premier has never held a driver's licence? - what a candidate for a cycling advocate)
For all you that travel by bicycle in the Western suburbs the TODs at Brompton and Woodvile are a once in a generation opportunity to bring about meaningful and innovative change. These are glory days to be involved and seize the advantages, spead the word for the myriad benefits of cycling. Support the great work that Sam Powrie (and others) have been undertaking to ensure lthat inkages are created to enable safe routes for cyclists. Connection is integral to usability. It appears that a window of opportunity is ajar, the winds of change are blowing.
David.

Nice to see the work "myriad" used correctly! Good work! ;-p

Thanks Dave but what BISA does is just commonsense stuff - we just try to provide a voice for bicycle use and the ordinary folk who use them. Safe and secure cycling is a human right - not a privileged pursuit.
On the subject of TODs - we need to be careful we don't swallow too much spin here! When BISA and the ACC sponsored a seminar with Peter Newman here a couple of years ago for a combined Councils get together, I learned that the concept of a TOD is actually pretty adventurous. It locates a very nice place to live (without being prescriptive as to character, design, environment mind you) with places to work, to relax, to enjoy, to grow up, to grow old, to shop, to go to school etc etc etc. And also to get immediate access to large scale PT - rail and maybe buses as well - if you want to go somewhere else.
What I believe Peter Newman also said is that a TOD is NOT, repeat NOT, just a block of flats next to a railway station!
If you look at the St Clair Concept Plans at the Charles Sturt web site (See #1 below) you'll see that the only area marked down as 'TOD' is a rectangular area, looking remarkably like a block of flats, immediately across the line from the railway station. The whole St Clair/Cheltenham redevelopment should be defined as a TOD!
I mentioned this to local member Jay Weatherill recently - that it is a misuse of the term to call a block of flats near the railway a 'TOD'. I believe he agreed but pointed out that this is a private development and the bottom line is selling the car-dependent customers what they expect.
I was talking to him about the City to Outer Harbour Green Travel Corridor - GTCs are probably THE most interesting aspect of Safety in Numbers, the state's cycling strategy. The concept plans don't even mention the GTC yet the km or so that is supposed to run down the Southern boundary of the Cheltenham redevelopment is the absolutely crucial 'central section' where a high, speed bike path is required to join the railway boulevards at either end. BISA has written to the Minister for Transport and to Minister's Wright and Weatherill, as well as to the St Clair developers, to the LMC and to CS Council to try to get them to rework the path shown in the concept plans into something that does justice to the GTC idea. Currently the plans show something with multiple, repeating bends, lots of bush growth, no separate footpath (imagine 'rush hour') and no linkages at either end. There will be an information article up at the BISA web site shortly.
Regards,
Sam Powrie.

I love the comment "You're wearing lycra, you've given up that right to be a big mucho man"

Yep, I can relate to that remark as I`m fat, older than many and often over taken on hills. I do try to hold the wheels so as to get a bit of a draft but never manage for long.
Not really about machismo or competition or racing in many peoples case but sometimes an individuals personal `race` with the `Reaper` purely to develope his own improvement in fitness. for health reasons.
Well it is in my case anyway!
