Hi,

I have never commuted to work to date but would like to start but a little apprehensive to start.

I am after some advice from cyclist that might commute or ride in the city on good roads to use and or not use on my way in and my way out during peak traffic periods.

I live in the southern suburbs and will commute down the Veloway which is a no brainer but where to from here.  I work on Unley Road, Malvern near Wattle Street so was considering Marion Road, Cross Road and Unley Road.  My thought was they are wide roads with room for cyclists with little stopping hopefully required.

What should I be considering in my route planning?

Thanks

Paul

If you go via Marion Rd, you go across the same bridge that the tram uses.

One other thing to consider about Cross road is trucks ...

Things to consider.

How fast do you want to ride.

If you are in a hurry keeping to the more direct route will probably be quicker.

If you want to ride slower bike paths such as the Mike Turtor, the southern green way or through Walparinga may be worth considering.

Is it worth considering the side streets more if it is very wet?

Spray from other traffic can be unpleasant and riding in traffic when wet is more hazardous.

The other thing to consider is do you just want transport from the ride?

If the weather is pleasant is the ride home an opportunity to unwind take a less direct route and enjoy the scenery.
