Colin's riding London to Hastings for a friend, cancer awareness and much more..

Colin is a friend to many of us and member of Adelaide Cyclists and the Cancer Voices SA Cycling Team.  We wish him well on his trip to the UK.  Here is his story that appeared in the Messenger 14 Jul 11:

WHEN Colin Ware-Lane rides in next month’s London to Hastings bike ride, he will dedicate it to a friend who was meant to be by his side.

The Morphett Vale man chose to take on the challenging and notoriously hilly 114km ride through the Kent countryside at the suggestion of his UK-based friend Kim Todd, whom he met as a teenager 30 years ago.

“Kim had already ridden in the London to Brighton race and we joked about doing one much harder with lots of hills, so we both entered and had been training for it,” Mr Ware-Lane says. But Ms Todd, 44, has since had to withdraw from the ride after she was diagnosed with breast cancer two months ago.

Mr Ware-Lane, 50, says he will now dedicate the ride to his friend and aim to raise awareness of breast cancer and charity Cancer Voices SA. “Given she can’t do it I will dedicate my efforts to her,” he said.

“If she is up to it I am hoping Kim might ride the last 5-6kms with me.

“The ride is to show Kim you can take challenges head-on and, in her case, it’s the challenge of her life.”

In preparation for the August ride, Mr Ware-Lane has been taking on some of Adelaide’s steepest hills around Mt Lofty, Norton Summit and our own Willunga Hill.

“I love riding it’s just the freedom of being out there to smell the roses,” he says.
