Last night I watched the 6 pm Ch9 news?
In the sports report they had a segment on the Tour of Quatar. They showed a bloke falling of his bike, so short that they could not give his name, but long enough to poke fun at him. From the colour of his jersey, I think it is the Italian Champion.
The news thing they omitted to report, was that an Aussie born rider, Heinrich Haussler actually did win that stage. He also won the next day, Wed. as well.
I've written to them suggesting that some of us are actually interested in who won, and we always get a winner, unless it's cricket.
I realise they have a certain bogan element out there that can only focus on bad luck, and their bogan reporters need to cater for them. As an aside Ch2 did know who won but no mention of the chap who fell.
Feel free to vent your wrath by way of a email to Ch9.

You know the head of Channel 9 in Adelaide, Graham Gilbertson, is a very very keen cyclist. Genuine.

Permalink Reply by Derek Hasel on February 10, 2011 at 10:11 Hi Denis. I am fortunate in that I can afford to pay for FOXTEL. It is on LIVE each night for an hour. I record each Stage and watch it the next morning. Yep Heinrich won last night. Boonen punctured and lost well over a minute and a half. Renshaw was a close second. I will be very surprised if Heinrich (now racing as an Aussie, of course) does not win the ToQ. Very powerful rider.
As for the so called news programmes, I fortunately don't watch any of them. In Adelaide they are usually full of Bogan sport reports. ie AFL. :))
Yes it was the Italian Champion Visconti fell heavily after hitting a 'cat's eye' whilst looking over his shoulder. It seems the 'cat's eye's' in Qatar as as large as cats , du to the blowing sand that makes most things almost invisible.,

Permalink Reply by Derek Hasel on February 12, 2011 at 14:20 I agree with you entirely Clayton. I guess there are always the knockers.
If there is road bike racing on then I'll watch it. I'm not one of those people who cut off their nose to spite their face. Nice to say 'Hallo' tis morning, even if it was from one side of ANZAC H'way to the other !
Permalink Reply by Michael Warner on February 12, 2011 at 12:17 Well, I strongly disapprove of giving Murdoch any sort of encouragement, especially financial, but if you have it to watch cycling, I guess that's ok :-)
From what I've seen pay TV is mostly re-runs and has a lot of ads and promo spots, though.

Permalink Reply by Derek Hasel on February 10, 2011 at 20:23 Agreed. Interesting how most commentators class it as the first Big race of the year. And some say that the TDU is boring. If it wasn't for the wind blowing everyone around. I am sure half the Peleton would go to sleep on their bikes
Magnus B was saying that when he was racing there, on the first Stage the DS said to him "there is a sprint point 100 metres past the left turn".
Magnus did not have to ask which left turn as there was only ONE !!!!
Permalink Reply by Patrick O'Kane on February 10, 2011 at 20:33 I find it bizarre that the middle east pays big money to host these sporting events, The Tour of Qatar, V8's in Abu Dhabi, Tennis in Doha, the golf in Dubai. I know money is irrelevant to the oil sheiks but it all seems so false and artificial, no spectators anywhere, just a big advertising coup for the host nations.
I like my sport to be connected with the fabric of the host nation like cycling in the Giro or TdF where it has real meaning to the locals. Half the spectacle of the TdF is watching the crowds and scenery as the peloton goes by.
