Hey y'all. Thinking about the possibility of changing my standard cranks to compact. I currently run shimano 105 5700l (if that means anything) and have a couple of Q's for all the technically minded peeps out there

1- I've seen a shim 105 5750 crank. Will this fit my existing set up?
2- do I need to change the bottom bracket?

Thanks for any feedback in advance!

Yep, I pretty much use 50/11 downhill or on very rare tail wind high speed flats. Not used much!

Another question. For exmple is an ultegra cassette compatible with 105 components??

should be as both are shimano, not sure about the chain though

Hard to find a 12-28. Most seem to be 11-28.
SRAM do a 12-28 cassette, pretty sure they are compatible and bolt straight on

Oh, and a 39 x 28 is a 37.6 gear inches, nearly as low as a 34 x 25 which is 36.7

Shimano do a 12-30, but you would need a new rear deraileur for that I believe
12-30 is a bit extreme. 11-28 may just leave a few in the middle missing. SRAM 12-28 may be an option or can get 105 12-27

Too many decisions!!!

Im pretty sure the cogs in ultegra are

12-13-14-15-16-17-19-21-23-25

11-12-13-14-15-17-19-21-24-28

you only drop the 16 and jump on the granny.

The 24-28 is where the big jump occurs, run compacts and a 11/25 and you be spinning your way up any hills that SA has to offer!
I easily do cork screw seated on that and my legs are by no means power houses!
Thanks frank. I am considering going a 12-27. I can generally get up the hills that are around my area but sometimes just need that bit of relief. The jump from 24-28 does seem significant
But, you would only use it now and then as a bail out gear presumably, not be shifting in and out of it every ride, essentially a 9 speed cassette plus 1.

Think there are pros and cons for either standards or compacts, at the end of the day it comes down to what you want.

Lord knows how we survived with only 5 speed groups not so long ago! :)

The jump from 24 to 28 is a beautiful thing when buzzing up Nettle Hill!

I use a 13-27 Ultegra, which is also difficult to find, but made one up from two other cassettes. The sprockets can be interchanged, even if you need to use one or two sprockets from say a 105 or a Dura-Ace. All the sprockets from a given speed range, will interchange. eg: a 16T from a 105 will work with an Ultegra cassette, or Dur-Ace, providing they are all from 9 speed or all from 10 speed.
