Cargo Bike Picnic Adelaide - April 22nd 2012

Hi All

For anyone interested - the Adelaide cargo bike fans are having a community picnic next weekend to share their machines and discuss doing more with bikes for everyday transport. It is amazing how a cargo bike can change the way you think and feel about transport - allowing kids to be taken to school, family shopping to be done, camping trips and general urban load carrying duties that far exceed the capacity of a normal bike or bicycle trailer.

For those of you new to cargo bikes they come in all different shapes and sizes. There are 'long tail', long wheel based machines such as Xtracycle, Kona Ute, Yuba andSurly Big Dummy - through to box bikes both of the two wheel and tricycle variety such as the Dutch Bike and Christiania

I will be there with both a box bike and an customized Xtracycle - the nice thing about the Xtracycle is that it allows you to turn an old MTB into a dedicated load hauling machine at minimal cost (a great product!)

So far the morning is looking beautiful for the Cargo Bike Picnic!

Checked out the BOM, the scattered showers coming through appear very scattered, nothing we can't cope with.

Looking forward to checkin out everyone's loadcarrying options :-) (especially as the load that people will be carrying involves food!)

I have just spent yesterday riding around Amsterdam. I have see more bikes in one day then I have seen in my life. I have seen heaps of cargo bike, most with one or two kids in the front. 99% of the cargo bikes are 2 wheel box bike with a box a the front. Bakfiets is the most common brand. Enjoy the picnic

Andrew's Yuba seemed to get the most smiling faces from cyclists who had a test ride (or 2 or 3 because they like the bike so much). This model with the electric motor and disk brakes (useful for a cargo bike) cost $2,500, which is reasonable compared with some cargo bikes or a carbon bike.

What a wonderful day today . I felt like a kid again getting all excited over the large number of different cargo bikes ( and trikes!) .

Thanks to everyone who came along today and made this such a successful event. It was great to see such a large range of bikes and trikes on display with the owners more than happy to let people go for a spin around Elder Park. Already looking forward to the next one!

I've posted a number of photos in my 'My Photo's page here: LINK (I think this will work).  A number of people have put comments which is great!

btw - I'm a very average photographer so apologises if I have a bad shot of you.  I even missed a few bikes (including my own!).  I always get home, fire up photoshop and think - why did I take it like that!  I was also using my old camera as the wife had the new one (she also takes much better photos).

btw - should anyone want the 'Digital Negative' (*.DNG) I always shoot RAW so I have them available.

Wearing that T-shirt, two gold stars! Now you need Gus to give you a new one for the advertising exposure.

The only downer was the topic, but some inspirational stuff there also. I am encouraging both my daughters to be strong, self confident and not afraid to seek assistance when required. You go girl.
