Typing this while wide awake after the op at 3am.

All went well, despite a little pain for the first hour or so I'm now feeling pretty good just rotating an ice bag on and off & rehydrating. That was the part of the fasting I really struggled with as I usually go through close to 5 litres even on days where I haven't been riding.

Have been sat in bed reading issues 9 & 10 of Peloton, I can already tell I'll be itching to get back on the bike (even if it's just the trainer) as soon as the team at Mega Bike can get it healed.

Mikael, what time was the op? A matter of unable to sleep afterwards? Sounds like the op was late in the day which required a very long fast. Hope your bone heals quickly. You sound like a real cyclist, already concerned about how long it will take for your bike to heal!

The op was at about 6ish, I'd fasted since 8 and had not drunk since midday. Absolutely demolished a couple of cheese & salad sandwiches when I got back to my room.

I think the sleep thing is just how my body reacts to the anaesthetic, I was the same after my ankle op. A bit of a snooze (1-2hrs) after eating for the first time & then up all night.

Here's the 'after' shot with a lazy 8 screws holding the plate in place.

Glad you are on the mend! Those surgeons would make terrible carpenters!

Yeah, I'm not sure about that outer edge. Not so keen on it sticking up away from the bone, but I assume that's why there are more screws in that end.

Mikael, know what you mean, it is easier to fast overnight while asleep. So what is in store for you now? When do you go back to work?

Basically I look after it & gently start moving it over the next 2 weeks while I'm off work. I see the surgeon again at some point next week to have the dressing removed & see how it's healing.

At this point it's really a case of icing it and taking anti inflammatory drugs to get rid of the swelling, which can't happen quickly enough, the joint just feels so big & heavy at the moment.

Hi Mikael,  I am so glad your operation went well.  Your x-ray is so similar to mine, but wow, you got eight screws, I only have six, I think.  Yes, I see what you mean about the bit away from the bone at the end...

They told me that my plate will be visible, when the swelling goes down, as I am kind of "bony" anyway and it will stick out.  I look forward to having it removed too.  Did the surgeons tell you whether yours would show?

Yes, I remember the fasting.  They fasted me from Friday lunch time until after my op on the Sunday night, because they kept planning to do it, but other emergencies came in all the time and it was put off.  I was lucky that I was on a drip for fluids the whole time though.  The only thing they could find for me to eat on the Sunday night was a few packets of Jatz biscuits, as dinner was long since over (around 11 pm).  Food wasn't too much of an issue for me as I felt sick and was throwing up anyway, from concussion and all the pain killer drugs like morphine and such.

Heal well, heal fast!  All the best and hope you are feeling better now.  Also very happy to hear bike is on the improve too.

Katrina, how are you now?

Yeah the plates are always going to be visible to some extent because there's so little in the way of tissue between the top of the bone (where the plate sits) and your skin.

I've got a pretty good range of movement in it now but because the joint was inactive for a week before the operation the muscles are pretty stiff & weak.

Well, the good thing is, you are on the healing side of things now.  Yes, there is a stiffness and weakness for a while. You are on the way to recovery!

My shoulder was broken in Oct-2011 but compacted so no surgery but arm in a sling for 2 months. Six months later in May-2012 and still doing physio to regain full arm movement.
