Yeah I'm not that concerned about it, I did a couple of years of physio at uni and understand enough about injury management to look after it til I speak with the surgeon tomorrow.

Based on the x-ray (should be in my first post from last night) it doesn't look like the ends of the bone pieces are gonna find their way back together without a little artificial assistance. I've gone through similar surgery on my ankle before and bounced back pretty well so I'm pretty relaxed about the whole thing.

Thing I'm most annoyed about is crashing the new bike only 3 weeks after taking delivery.

Yes its a pity about the bike. Make sure that a concerned family member does NOT ebay it behind your back lol. Your xray is similar to mine, ie  a comminuted mid shaft fracture, except mine was a little closer to the rib. From my understanding that ruled me out of contention for a clavicle pin. Good luck for tomorrow.

I wish I had one of those...

Im not a real cyclist yet......

Rob, it's not the most enjoyable rite of passage to be honest.

Michael this may be a complete noob question, but if your collarbone is broken into multiple pieces is it really a good thing to leave it for days in that state? Id have thought the faster you can get it all put back together the better.
Unfortunately not much to do about it because of Easter, the surgeon I'm seeing tomorrow was there on Saturday but was already in surgery so it seemed a waste of an emergency bed for me to wait around and he's off til Tuesday.

Any time within the 1st two weeks is ok to perform surgery, the bones won't start to really knit until after that time. The only time it's more urgent is there's a danger of one of bone pieces puncturing a lung, which they decided was unlikely.

Hope it all went well at the orthopaedic surgeon today, Mikael :-)

Yep, booked in for Friday evening.

I'm going to have it fixed like yours. Speaking to the surgeon he said the intermedullary pin can cause the c/b to shorten in cases where there are fragments in between the the two main sections, because the main sections can travel along the pin towards each other as it heals.

The plate & screw option is still as strong in the long term as long as you don't injure it again while it's in there, I'll probably get it taken out in about 9 months to a year.

Same for me - recommended to have it removed in 9 months to a year.  The orthopaedic surgeon who did it would rather it stays in for a whole year.

Wish you all the best for your op :-)

Rob, I hope for your sake that you stay just the kind of cyclist you are.  You don't want this ever...

Thanks to members who are discussing this to help injured cyclists now, and those who will break a collarbone one day . . .

Katrina and Mikael, I have added on AC group Look For Cyclists a link to this discussion so it can be found easily. http://www.adelaidecyclists.com/group/lookforcyclists/forum/topics/...
