Current BMI 22.4 (196cm tall and max 86.4kgs), daily kCals set at <3000/day; incorporating sufficient carbohydrate, protein, vitamins, fibre and water etc.  Constant monitoring and balancing every calorie consumed with every calorie burned, and substituting/complementing the “real” with synthetic concentrated supplements in order to stay fit, healthy and build muscle strength/speed/recovery.  Top shelf both at work and home with various (legal) powders and pills, and iPhone with the best ever food/exercise monitoring application so that things can be tracked and subsequently reviewed if need be.

Why?  Well, I want to be stronger, faster, better – I want to be n + 2, and because of my lifestyle, personal nutrition usually takes a back seat and that’s not a good thing when the body is being asked to go up mountains and the balance isn’t as it should be (believe me, I know).

Anyway, the balance for me seems quite good and I’m curious, is anyone else among you likewise bike consumption obsessive, count calories consumed/burned, or been burnt for poor diet/exercise balance?

Ohh- yeah. You are So gunna cop it tomorrow morning.

I only have two questions.

1/ What the **** are all those charts and diagrams about?           NO, don't tell me, I really didn't want to know.

2/ What's in those funny plastic bottles? - I've never seen wine or beer packaged like that before.

Slightly more seriously, my answer to your original question is obviously, no.

That doesn't mean I'm not a believer. I've borrowed human nutrition text books from a med student and I was fascinated to learn about glycogen, fatty acids and ATP, and the thresholds at which the body switches from one fuel type to the another. But I rapidly lose interest when it comes to dietary analysis and measuring my calorie intake yada yadda blahhh.. (see I'm bored just writing about it). At least I know what I'm doing wrong when I'm living large on the weekend!

Like fine tuning a Ferrari, you'll no doubt get the best performance out of you body.

I think I'm more like a Holden ute. Never gets any care or attention; roll it out, kick it in the guts, and expect it to run all day..

ZZ you have me intrigued what iphone app is that?

health is the best reason of all, especially if you've had engine trouble recently.

You thrash me over Mt Lofty each week so you're doing plenty of things right.

I'm careful with what I eat, but not obsessed with it. I try to eat a fairly balanced diet, quite heavy with Carbs, but enough protein etc to keep it all in balance; and definitely a bit of chocolate :)

I watch my weight, although if it starts to rise too much I tend to regulate it by increasing exercise rather than changing diet.

For me it all seems to work pretty well as I haven't had any major issues with poor diet leading to poor performance or other issues.

PS, current BMI 20.8, height 165cm, weight 56.5kg.

So last night I had lamb curry, pappadums, naan bread and red wine and then chocolate pudding with cream - is that a dinner of champions?

You wouldn't possibly eat a combination like that if you wanted to be an elite cyclist, would you?

I had a champagne, a pheasant and a woman before we hit the trails yesterday!
(and no drugs, of course..) That's such a great line.
Ryan Bailey can get away with a diet of KFC and Tim Tams......what you've just described is a diet of champions by comparison!!!

Eat more whilst riding, and cycle faster, for longer. You burn more fat, the rest is just for recovery :)

There is nothing like a 600 to 700+ KM week, to loose a couple of KGs. Got no idea, how many calories you burn! Also reckon the calorie calculators are tweeked differently on each type of Garmin device, if you have a HRM.

Ohh.. the only time I use Powerade now, is on the major events. If it causes things to grew in your water bottle, it cant be good for you on every ride.

But surely, try leaving anything you eat or drink (that isn't water) lying around and you will see things grow! i.e. if I leave a piece of bread lying on the table for two weeks then its going have things growing on it... doesn't mean I shouldn't be eating bread!

"Why?  Well, I want to be stronger, faster, better"

OK. WHY do you want to be stronger, faster better?
