Coates champions Cadel as Games flag-bearer

Is this a bit of a joke, Cadel has hardly set the Olympics on fire as a MTBer or road racing, he's not even guaranteed to be there yet and I suspect he's more focused on Paris than London at the moment. Is this just a bit of a publicity stunt or does Cadel deserve the honour of leading out the team at the opening ceremony.

Personally I think there are many more worthy athletes to be considered before Cadel.

Yeah kind of agree with you on this one Pat! Flag bearers at the Olympics should be reserved for Great Olympic athletes and to date Cadel has not put himself in that category

A good rule to have if you are a country that has an Olympic Champion. I'm not sure how the smaller countries go but I agree Cadel has not earned the right to carry the flag for Oz ......yet.

Stuey is my choice like those below.

Stuey is on for his 5th olympics. That means flag bearer for sure. 20 years of olympics, or at the top of your game. My pick anyway.

I was thinking the same thing Pele Ton.

+1 for sure.

Years ago the Olympics were only for non professional athetes and no sponsorship.... (what I recall anyway) but since about the time of the Los Angeles Olympics in 84 that all changed...

Unless you came from the Eastern Bloc and/or a Communist Regime  then it was your job to compete for your country while serving in the military or some other government funded group. Removing the amateur status was supposed to just level the playing field amongst other things.

@Jeremy, that was the Eastern Bloc regim, the USA did it with Uni scholarships, Chinese gave a choice, education or military. Interestingly JohnClarke was on ABC this morning talking about this stuff which his 3 part doco covers, starts this Sunday on your ABC at 7.30
