Those that use the Linear Park bicycle path west of Hackney Rd, will have noticed the bridge across the river has been blocked this past week for repairs. Just to update you on the status, I spoke to the workmen there today and they said it will be blocked for at least another week.

Permalink Reply by heather on May 23, 2012 at 11:36 Juz, can you imagine authorities using this solution for motor transport -- drivers can push their vehicles along the unsafe road sections. At that same time the State Government says that it wants to increase cycling.
Tim, the authorities have no idea of cycling, cycling shoes and cyclist safety.
Permalink Reply by Rob W on May 23, 2012 at 11:52 not to mention, the gate is badly placed. After you have ridden down the hill on the other side, you are left with either going back up the hill or using the steps.
Why would you have to go back up the hill? There is no way that the gate can stop you - sure if there was a 3 metre high chain link fence, but a silly little boom gate doesn't stop you. Even when there was bunting and half the planks were missing from the bridge it was still easy to cross.
BTW, when there is a "Cyclists Dismount" sign does that mean you have to get off and then get back on? If it said "Cyclists Dismount while crossing the bridge" ok, but it doesn't! Anyway I would say there is no legally enforceable obligation to follow the sign - it is just an advisory sign.
Permalink Reply by Rob W on May 23, 2012 at 15:20 I'm guessing they are going to use the gate when the bridge is flooded.
Permalink Reply by Torsten Bunge on May 23, 2012 at 20:03 I guess their mentality is falling into the river while walking is safer than falling into the river while riding.
Permalink Reply by CLP on May 23, 2012 at 12:04 that's what i mentioned earlier in the thread. those signs appeared at the same time as the bollards. Bollards are now gone thankfully, stupid signs remain.
There's another one of those signs on the next bridge too which has been there for a number of years. :(
The one on the next bridge makes sense as its very narrow and has poor sight lines, simply slowing down to walking pace and using one leg to push works fine.
Permalink Reply by Michael Bland on May 23, 2012 at 18:31 I've always liked this bridge because it's actually the closest you get to the river on the whole length of the Linear Track . I suppose I also see it as a challenge .. If risk of injury , bike damage ,or an unplanned swim doesn't make me dismount , than that sign definitely wont .... ride on >>>>> 8~)
Any news on this Bridge? Both wheels slipped sideways on the slope after the bridge coming across towards the city today - but I suspected sabotage, someone tipping oil on the slope. Hi forum members! my first post.
