Ride Summary
All the talk prior to today’s GW ride was about Black Caviar! The world’s best sprinter was in Adelaide today chasing her world record 20th consecutive victory. Did you see the race? What a fantastic win in front of a sell-out crowd!
We got to the track a little earlier today to farewell some of the Gawler Wheeler regulars who this weekend are riding the 290 kms to Port Elliott and back. They are Juz, Pete, Michael, Dave and Andrew. We received progress reports during the day and are pleased to advise that they made it safely to Port Elliott at 1.47pm. A big 140 km ride today with Juz texting on arrival “.. about to go hunt food…..want fooooooooood!” Well done today crew and safe riding back tomorrow!
During the ride brief, following the overwhelming success and positive feedback last week of THE WHISTLE concept, Wilson expanded the initiative and presented two new whistles to yours truly and TEC Mick. The concept is all about enhancing the GW experience during our re-groups. We also welcomed newbie Craig, aka “CJ”, along for his first GW ride.
On a very crisp morning the other 47 riders left the starting gates for the scheduled 60km ride which took us down the Stuart O’Grady Bikeway. Whilst it was a little cool there was no wind and no rain so we knew that it would be a great ride. The first 23km leg along the SOB was a blast, and inspired by Black Caviar, was a flat out sprint for most riders at speeds of 30 – 40 kms. However unlike Black Caviar we needed a well-deserved re-group at the end of this leg.
On the SOB if you escape the wind on the down track you normally cop it on the way back. That was not the case today….yippee! All the way back to Jaspers Café the conditions remained perfect with no wind and the sun caressing us as we zoomed along. It was great to see many sub-groups form and riders helping each other along. Many PBs were recorded this morning with many average speeds of over 30kms for the 60 km ride. WELL DONE everyone…another brilliant GW ride just like Black Caviar's!
NEXT WEEK: We will be holding two concurrent rides. One is on a brand new undulating route through the Barossa Valley over a mammoth 105 kms. The other ride will also take us through the Barossa on a shorter 60km route. YOU are welcome to attend….just pick the ride that suits you best! Full details will be posted on AC Events soon! Did see John flying past as we were getting towards southern end.
Probably never be quick enough to return the favour, but you never know when help will be needed. Is why GW so good I think.

May 5th Gawler Wheeler Ride details have now been posted. Weather forecast is looking very good at this stage. These two routes will take you through some beautiful tranquil countryside. Only thing missing is traffic lights etc! The first 30 kms are common to both rides. We will then split at Tanunda, where you can choose to complete the 105 km route or the 60 km route. You can decide on the day.....just RSVP for one of the events via the links below. If you have never been on a GW ride don't let that worry you.....just roll up just after 7.00 and we will do the rest. (We love newbies). Ride Links:

Great write up Frank, just thinking now how can I spend my $ 0.40 that I won on the horse, maybe a cheap bike on ebay, not. Nice paced ride with the fairy staying away for the day allowing us all to get back in a good time.
Another Black Caviar Mare from the GW Stable broke a record today, will let her tell the story and keep you all waiting. Still good numbers coming out for the cold morning ride, making it harder to work out what to wear as it warms up later in the day.
Here hoping the 5 Musketeers heading to Port Elliot and back had a great time, maybe in the pub watching the horse race before a big sleep.
Weather is looking good for next week so you good thing.

Hi All - what a(nother) great GW ride.
it was a fast start when the Starter released the gates with a whistle and the traditional 'rolling' call. The SOB Track was in great condition, probably rated as 'Hard', but easy to ride on. I was pretty happy riding in the Main Field and moving between bunches depending on speed and stopping at the intersections. Once we got back onto the SOB and started Heading for Home i started like a Shot from a Gun and we had a nice bunch going along, then someone else took a turn out front and i was dropped :-( and rode back the rest of way back to Jaspers on my own :-(( so no bunch assistance but still managed to get myself a nice ave of 30 so pretty happy overall. I think the Handicapper should apply a Weight Penalty to all these new bikes that are turning up, im sure some of them have motors, as their owners seem to ride a lot faster!
as always, looking forward to next Saturday - what a great reason to get up early on a weekend.

ah Peter i'd suggest taking the foot of the pedal for a moment or two to let a group behind you catch up and get assistance of them? averaging 30km/h aint bad at all.. i reckon you were between packs and the pack behind you just couldn't make up that ground.

Getting up early for Gawler Wheelers Saturday morning are well worth it.. This Saturday was a little chilly, have to invest in some full tip gloves. The ride was very quick and a great challenge. As a 15 year old, I am learning something new after each ride, the members of the GW are always informative, helpful and motivational. Being a young rider I feel comfortable riding with GW as everyone looks out for everyone.. Always look forward to going on the website to see Franks photos and comments after the rides.

Great ride report Frank was a really nice day thanks Mike another top job as TEC.
I know of a lovely Filly who broke a record on Saturday she tell me she broke the 60Km distance barrier.
There got two horse racing terms in one sentance.
