Who'd have thought? I wonder how many studies it will take before Australian cities wake up? Some towns in Italy (like Sienna) are completely car free. The reason is different, but the result is a town people can walk and shop freely in, and enjoy. I'm not suggesting Adelaide CBD become car free, but more emphasis on foot traffic and cycling, with an extended tram system (LOL!) would make Adelaide a wonderful boulevard city. Imagine decreasing the road width of the major through-roads and planting more trees, having more outdoor cafe precincts, dedicated cycling roads and cycle parking areas, a slow-speed cycling lane up the Mall. More car parking on the outskirts, around tram stops perhaps. Some roads, like Gawler Place, close it to cars, allow deliveries and cyclists only. Then you could pave it and beautify it, because lets face it, it's pretty cruddy ATM.
People expect to park their cars within meters of where they shop or work. It's made them lazy. If they had to walk a couple hundred meters further it wouldn't kill them. Allow closer parking for handicapped.
I am pleased that the recent(ish) makeover of Semaphore Rd has included cycling in its design. There is an on-road lane (for roadies!) and a cycle path along the footpath. They could instal a few bike stands, but otherwise it shows they are thinking about keeping locals shopping locally. And it's getting used. So some signs of change, which is great.

Simon, you could ask Port Adelaide Enfield if extra bicycle parking is possible. Phone 8405 6600 or email custserv@portenf.sa.gov.au

The first thing you have to consider is that the economy is the MOVEMENT of money. If there is less money there is less likely to be movement of it. The big benefit that I can see is that instead of spending money on fuels that are bought from overseas companies, and thus sending the money overseas and "not around here" the money moves around the local area, thus "improving the economy." Not rocket science- just understanding the big words like Vegemite....
