Hi, thanks to the ppls that helped with sending me to bike shops accross the state.

I finally picked it up on friday arvo.  I ended up with an Orbera Aqua (Enol frame but Udana spec).

I was so eager to go and run in the tyres try out the new gear and see what it is like to use cycling shoes instead of sandshoes. Also see how this compairs to the old Trek. Well 10 years theres a lot of differance. no going back now.

Well living out north, i decided i'll go for my quick Mawson Lakes Loop. Then head out Saturday morning for a beach run, Semi to Glenelg.

Well this didnt happen and wont happen.  i'm a little lucky but, very SORE. I was almost home, i stopped at my last set of Traffic Lights, went to take off but as not used to the shoe and clips i didnt have enough speed. I tried and tried but i just couldnt do this. I then lost balance and then went over on my right hand side, hitting the ground hard. I then got up and rode off around the corner. Noticed the lever was bent, easily straightend but scratched. i was lucky the old lady seen me and stopped. I got up quickly. I rode home, but hitting a small hill on the way in.

I thought is was just a little scratch on my Knee but, with in a few hrs it was painfull. By 3am i was in pain, i knew i wasnt going to have a nice ride, or any ride. The weather being perfect and all. My leg now being sore, but the knee still killing me. I think i will have to miss a sunday ride too. I now have a joke with the Wife. The old bike is in better shap than the new one. I'll just have to practice and learn how to take off. The LBS did tell me that u should always unclip the right hand due to the danger falling in to traffic.

Well i will now have to have a weeks rest and get back out next weekend. My neighbour says i must have done something bad, Karma has cought up with you. Just hope i havent damaged my knee. Its Dam sore, big bruse on the inside of leg where the frame hit me too.

Sorry to hear of the mishap Dean. I bought some clipless pedals for my old bike before upgrading as I knew a fall was inevitable at some stage. Hang in there you'll get used to using them. I would disagree a little with the advice from the bike shop and unclip on whatever side seems more natural to you, but practice on both sides anyway.
Hi Dean,

It sounds as though you fell when you were trying to clip in, not out, which is what normally happens to beginners. You can pedal gently on a foot which isn't clipped in between attempts to clip it in - your other foot (I assume that was clipped in!) does most of the work, including pulling up a bit, although it's harder to do up a hill. Something to practice when your knee calms down :-)

As for the foot you unclip at lights etc, use whichever feels most natural to you. I'm right-handed and unclip my left foot - if I tried the other one, I'd probably fall off! You'll quickly learn to clip it in and out whenever you want to, without slowing down much or being distracted by it.
Thanks guys for the support, I hope no more Bus Stops, lol as Robert calls it. They hurt to much.
I so wana get out there and have a ride. But as the Knees is tender, i will have to rest it till next weekend, or well see how it goes in a few hours lol. Might just go up down the street practice a few stop take off and starts up and down hill. I guess its all about the push to take off and if u can get a good speed then u can roll untill your shoes in.

Lets hope the weathers great next weekend.

P.s. Hope to ride with you guys some time, the footage of the Gorge road decent looks awsome.
Mate that is just sheer bad luck about your fall.

I agree with the other guys here, unclip whichever foot you are comfortable with. Just like Micahel, I am right handed, but always unclip left. Don't try & race off from the lights, you have plenty of time generally, and you can peddle quite comfortably for a while without being fully clipped in.

Keep on practicing clipping & unclipping, it does get easier, but there are times when for whatever reason, the bastard thing just won't click in, but you just keep spinning until it does!

The Gorge Rd descent is great fun, as was the descent we did today down Greenhill! Videos I am sure will be posted later.

I always ride to any of our events, and live just up the Highway from you, so if you are looking for company on the ride in to any of them, let me know!
Love the pic of your bike Dean, I have the Aqua Dama and love it. I also have a few scratches from falls. The first time out I came to a stop and forgot to unclip, oops. Doesn't take long to get used to the pedals though.
I've come of since (think 3 times now all up) and last time I ripped right through the handle bar tape.
If you have time to prepare before a stop I find it easier to change down into easier gears, makes it easier when you go to take off again, a lot easier to pedal. If you can't get clicked in straight away don't worry, get through the lights first then sort out your pedals, takes the pressure of you.
Hope your knee feels better soon and that your next outing is uneventful.
Dean' i am sorry to hear of your teething problems but please do not despair. The secret is to try just one cleat at first probably the left would be the best . Then gradually go for short rides with start using the other shoe. rest easy my friend and start slowly slowly and before you know it you will be able to do a Glenelg run!!!!! Take anti inflammatory tabs for a few weeks and try again. Best of luck!!!!!
Thanks Kathryn, abd Yvonne. I have had a few rides up and down the street, out front of my house, its seams to be easy when u know your doing it but once out on the ride it will become the test. but i think it should be ok now. i just have to think lol.

Well the suns out and its a gr8 time for a ride. but this weekend i just keep getting a sight gut ache. It doesent feel like the usually gut ache. So i'll just have to rest. I think some ones up set with me and every time i wana go out on my bike there seams to be some thing stopping me.

I just wana get out there and have a nice ride. Its so fustrating. I wana build up the endurance so i can come out and ride with the guys on here and the Cancer guys.
