What a can of worms, and great wisdom from our government... Bike mechanics a lifestyle choice...? Well of course it is...! Hands up who would rather work on bikes, fixing your own and friends riding machines, and getting people out on the roads and trails on their bikes and burning less fossil fuels and being fit and healthy...? Government is right behind you though if you have a trade, which i do, and you want to go and work in a mine, which I won't, and rape the earth. You dont have to be a rocket scientist to figure out that it is in the governments interest to keep you chained to your car, paying your hard earned wages on bullshit loans for a fossil fuel guzzling machine to get to your shitty job that you hate to pay for shit you dont need. If your not consuming then your not contributing to society...! As a species we have failed, in that we have based our whole financial system around infinite growth when we rely upon a finite energy source. There has to be a move towards, and someone has to take a stand for more sustainability, and less reliance on fossil fuels. I sadly beleive that we have left it too late, and I like everyone else is part of the problem, and trapped on the treadmill of consumption. You need to get to the crap job, you need to earn the fiat currency (look it up people, we are being robbed) you need to feed your family, keep them warm et cetera. Because the government like to bend us over and put their hands in our pockets and take all they can, then the short sighted view will always be shut up, get in your car, drive to your shitty job, stamp numbers on cans, drive home, sit your fat ass in front of the television and turn on the football and dont think too hard about how we are all being scammed into the ideal that our lives are awesome and crack another tinny of watered down easily consumed dog water beer and high five your mates as the troglodytes chase the pig skin covered ball around and kick it between the posts. Go back to sleep Australia, your Government is in control.

This refers to VICTORIA, not Australia.  Of course a State Liberal Government. What else would you expect !

Oh and PS. The Liberal Government in Victoria has also cut the State bicycle Infrastructure budget  to ZERO.  Progressive, eh !

Sounds a lot like the Liberal NSW state government, the roads minister has been claiming sydneys cycleways are on the wrong roads but failed to offer the alternatives, on top of that they just announced they are scrapping plans to build a rail trail that links the inner west to the city.

Then just when we thought it couldn't get any worse they cut a deal with the shooters party, "If you vote to support selling power stations we'll let you go shoot animals in 79 of our national parks."

That'll put a twist on hiking and mountain biking.

Yep just been discussing, with my wife, the Liberals in NSW permitted open warfare on protected species in the National Parks there.Oh and Mountain Bikers, too !  What next for the Libs, a return to Whale and Dolphin hunting of the East Coast.

Doddsy, what sort of animals? I could accept shooting feral goats but not kangaroos.

Heather,

Why?

Kangaroos are native animals that were here before Europeans and their farms. Feral goats damage the Australian environment. Blake, does that answer your question?

If that is why you think it is okay to kill one animal over another then yes.

So goats, camels, pigs, foxes, cats, rabbits? They are all introduced and all ruin the environment.

Nothing wrong with eliminating ferals, The issue is recreational shooting.

People walking around national parks with guns for fun, not a bright idea.

From memory this story talks about about the trigger happy types, endangered breeds/protected species getting shot etc.

Next we'll be like some parts of the US where people drive around with bumper stickers saying i have a gun and i vote.

It may only be VIC at this present time, but with our state government pleading poverty and making cuts in the last budget released, it may only be a matter of time before they follow VIC. The main interest is keeping the cars on the road, and people paying for fuel. Why else would you flush so much money down the drain expanding the southern express way...? Wouldnt it have been more cost effective to invest that money in the railway or cycling infastructure...?

@Kranky.....roads mean votes.....and will remain that way as the majority of the population still drive cars....at the moment most of us dodge road works daily as the government upgrades....when the cost of petrol rises the sale of bikes rises as more people look for a cheaper option. However the healthy lifestyle seems to be short lived for many as gradually the shock of increased energy and fuel prices settles and season of winter kicks into full gear many revert back to the car.
Gradually over time hoping that continous cycle corridors will be developed better so us cyclists can leave the city more easily and cycle to tourist destinations for overnight stays on a weekend :)
