I rode 20kms in dark to pool – no real problems. I then rode 15km from Marion Swimming Centre to Unley. One very close bus. Bike Lanes appear and disappear. Cars come from left and right. One man texting as he drives half in the bike lane. Why can’t we have proper bike lanes in Adelaide?
I complained to Adelaide Metro (no response) and to Southlink - I was told it would be investigated.
As always - cycle like you are invisible - hate to be paranoid but it has saved me many a times.
Why can't we have the present road rules enforced?
I would agree that relying on someone else to keep you safe may not be a good strategy.
It would be interesting to know what the police need from a video to pursue prosecuting people.
considering your route would it be shorter to use part of the green way and then Winston / East Ave. to the Mike Turtor bike way then sneak though the back streets?
Well...it is kinda hard since they hating us for by law it is legal to ride side by side using one car lane.
Some people simply hate our right for space on the road.
I think someone need to do similar campaign as "share the road" campaign and tell them to pass a cyclist, the driver need pass them at least with 1 to 1,5 m space between bike and vehicle.
Part of the problem IMHO is that the skill set of the average driver doesn't include knowing where the left side of their vehicle is. Yesterday I watched my wife back out of the garage and nearly take off the left side mirror. watch people trying to parallel park their vehicles......how often do you see people actually get out of their cars to see how close to the kerb they are. How many times have you had a car sit behind you and wait till they can swing over the white line to pass you...even though there's enough room on your side to fit the car and the Tour de France peleton.
Part of the problem IMHO is that the skill set of the average driver doesn't include being able to drive.
Waiting is pretty much better than forcing to get through a small space.
I am still remember a stupid mitsubishi mirage with P on it, forcing to get through me and passed me with only 20 cm gap between me and that stupid car.
I am on main lane on anzac highway, I was forced to use main lane because there was a construction on cycling lane.
As considerate cyclist, I am cycling on the left side of the lane but it seems sometimes it is better to be a selfish bastard to use a whole lane for my own safety.
I think most of driver need is patience, braking, and how not to be paranoid.
I am driving in my home country and also here, but when I am going to driving school here I am quite surprised how the instructor rather than teaching, they are simply programming us with stupid sequence.
So rather than thinking what's going on the street, learner are busy with stupid sequence of everything.
Thanks Don. I did it this morning - it was much less stressful except for getting lost a couple of times (signage could be much better for first time users). This stress is infinately preferable to trucks and buses.
Well....I experienced similar thing like yours, passed by a bus very close like in the video.
But what makes it slightly worse, I was on bicycle lane.
Near miss with car sometimes happen to me too.
It is why I do always turn on light even in daylight.
Yep, I've spend a lot of time cycling through the marion Area.
Many roads have bike lanes at the lights, but they disappear at the other end of the intersection.
Its very dangerous because cars trucks and buses pull up beside you and when you take of legally you have nowhere to go.
In this circumstance its safer to run the red but there's often no opportunity because the roads are too busy.
They need to either remodel the intersections or give us a traffic light sequence that gives us a head start.
What! Give Australian cyclists good facilities and/or priority with traffic lights? It would be a shock to cyclists and drivers. :)
Often the place they are most needed is on the far side of intersections where bikes and motor vehicles are competing to squeeze into the same lane. Once you are already on the road at least you have some claim on the road space (not that it is always respected as evidenced by this video)
