Hi there

Can anyone please recommend someone to assess my current bike set-up and help to adjust to suit me?

Lately I've been experiencing groin pain after riding, and having been cleared of any other issues by my GP, think it is quite possibly related to my bike set-up.

If anyone has had similar issues and can suggest someone who may be able to assist, it would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Stephen

One cause is sitting too far forward onto the nose of the seat.  The generally accepted best seat set up is that the nose of the seat should be no further than 50 mm ( or 2 inches ), measured on the vertical, back from the BB centre line. Also, make a conscious effort to keep your position, and therefore weight back on the broad part of the seat, and of course with the seat set horizontal.

Your saddle could be to low. When pedalling do your knees move outwards at all? That could put your groin under unnecessary strain. Most bike stores should be able get your bike to fit right, but it takes time and money. Corsa Cycle Centre seems to have a good reputation. From personal experience the guys at the Giant store on Hindmarsh square know what they're doing as well. Otherwise there's Sheldon Brown's website, or Steve Hogg's blog.

It may be that the seat is too narrow.

Have you had your sit bones measured?

I love the way people who have probably never seen Stephen, or his bike, or how he sits on his bike, are happy to offer all sorts of snake-oil urban myths about bike set up

I'd recommend Steve Hogg if you can afford the trip to Sydney and his fees. I've followed his advise for years (but sadly never gotten around to visiting him in person) and it works for me.

Otherwise Steve at Corsa Cycles comes recommended by some (I'll preface that by saying I went to see him and didn't get what I wanted) as does Noel at the Bike Station. I've heard MegaBike and Bicycle Express can give good bike fitting advice if you get the right person on the day. Otherwise there are a few physiotherapists around Adelaide who claim to have cycle-specific knowledge. Have a look through this forum http://www.bicycles.net.au/forums/viewtopic.php?f=16&t=10865

Good luck and hope you get pain free soon

Steve did ask for comments from people who had a similar experience. My comments come from having had, and solved similar problems in the past. I had help from experienced ex pros who raced in the same vets club that I did for years in WA.

I'm inclined to agree with DD.

I swapped saddles based on recommendations from AC friends, caused me no end of grief and pain. Sold the seat to another AC member who loves it and I went back to my old one. General advice can be helpful but trying to give specific bike fit, positioning, health type advice over the internet often seems to end badly IMO.

Dahondude -  bit un-necessary there.

People are offering suggestions and information, based on what they experienced .     People saying what worked for them - isnt "snake oil". It isn't "creating an urban myth".

& Stephen surely understands very well, what works for them, might not work for him. But he  will get knowledge of the issues,  will hear things he can consider and maybe try, and  will understand  more. Thus in the end,  be better able to tackle it. Good thing all round

AdelaideCyclists is a good forum, for doing this. Why knock it?

Mike I get annoyed by people who don't answer the question being asked but just randomly throw in their opinions. Stephen asked a specific question - recommendations for a professional bike fitter. All three responses provided random bike fitting advice and only one of these gave some recommendations.

This is an interesting topic and one that I have been thinking about a fair bit recently. What I'm referring to is how people give and accept advice. This website thrives on asking for and giving free advice. Some people are good at answering the question and others just give an account of what has worked for their own circumstances. So it does leave it completely open for unqualified annectotes and the expense of more evidence based solutions. In this regard, I like your snake oil comparison and you just have to browse the discussions based on nutrition so realise that there are millions more opinions than there are measured rational answers. hijack over.

and some people on cue ask an exceptionally dumb question as their answer

Bicycle express will do a fit for 60 bucks.

It is a bit of a dark art but not unachievable. It is worth paying for if you are having serious issues - money well spent. Local bike fitters that always get recommended are:

Bio-Mechanics Cycles Repairs in the city,

Noel at The Bike Station

Mike Turtur Cycles

Corsa Cycle Centre

Someone (I think James) at EFM gym and physio in the city.
