Adelaide Cyclists

Apparently Road rules controlling bikes in South Australia appear to ban cargo bikes and any other bike wider than 700 millimetres. See http://www.copenhagenize.com/2009/06/rock-and-rules-wider-longer-hi... for further information on this

Hi,

I'm the Dan in the article, and I have just received a letter from the Minister. The changes necessary changes to the regulations are being drafted and will be likely promulgated by the end of the Parliamentary year. So, subject to approval by Parliament we should be at the same level as the rest of the country - no other states have such restrictions according to Bicycle Victoria.

The Minister also noted that exemptions may be granted for oversize bikes, so maybe it's time to ensure that you are legally riding your Greenspeed, Trisled, Christiania bike or other that is wider than 700mm by requesting an exemption by applying to the Minister, and letting him know that the size restriction is affecting people.

You guys have some weird laws.

Is it true that Adelaidians aren't allowed to ride on the Tram tracks on king william street and North Terrace?

That's the safest place in the city to cycle (with the exception of the parklands and rundle mall).
No cars, No buses pulling over, no taxi ranks...

Pure heaven.

I am not sure what the law is with regard to tram tracks, but I know when I lived in Melbourne I considered tram tracks to be a major hazard in terms of your wheels getting caught in the ruts and they are as slippery as anything when it is wet (which seemed to be most to the time in Melbourne).

With the help of BISA, we have successfully lobbied the government to change the regulations (PDF) regarding bicycle size restrictions. Regulation 28 (Dimensions of bicycles) has been removed.

What is no longer in the regulations:

28—A person must not ride a bicycle on a road unless it complies with the following
requirements:
(a) the handlebars of the bicycle must be symmetrical on each side of the centre
line of the bicycle;
(b) the extreme ends of the handlebars must extend not less than 200 millimetres
nor more than 350 millimetres on each side of the centre line of the bicycle;
(c) the height of the uppermost part of the handlebar grip must not be more than
300 millimetres above the lowest part of the upper surface of the seat;
(d) the horizontal distance measured from the centre of the pivot head bearing on
the front tube of the frame to a point vertically above the axle of the front
wheel must not exceed 250 millimetres;
(e) the overall width of any equipment or load carried on the bicycle must not
exceed 700 millimetres.
