I realise that bicycle shops have high overheads what with rent, utilities employment costs etc. So I am wondering if anybody knows of a small or home operator that can provide a service at a reasonable price. I am mechanically challenged, fitting a new bell or light to the handle bars should only be attempted with the assistance of Valium.

I live in the Nth East subs, work in Regency Park but am prepared to drop off the bicycle anywhere within reason.

G'day Clive.

I would really strongly recommend Kevin of Clarke Cycles on Magill Road.

He has been there over 30 years, is a sole operator and has given me hundreds of dollars worth of free advice. Plus he will either stock or be able to order in any parts that you might need - which the home mechanic may not be able to do.

And I doubt that you'll find better service or prices anywhere in Adelaide.

Other than that, if there are particular mechanical tasks that you'd like to learn to do, I'm sure that the AC community will be happy to teach (and possible offer several various methods each resulting in a good solution)!

Best of luck.

Alex
Hi Clive,

It wouldn't take you very long to become confident about doing the great majority of maintenance jobs yourself. There's lots of help online - Sheldon Brown's site, the Park Tools site and youtube are good places to try, and only a few, cheap specialized tools are needed.

As long as you remember to not overtighten bolts and grease nearly everything you assemble, it's pretty hard to do any damage.
Many thanks to all respondants including 4 email. I found a local shop that I didn't realise existed until yesterday who offer service at a reasonable price and I dropped the bike off there this evening. As I said before I am really challenged when it comes to fiddly nuts, screws, tensioning cables etc,
What and where is the bike shop?
CRIME cycles Shop 11, 414 Milne Road, Redwood Park, SA 5097 8396 1069
Components raced in mountain extremes.
At one stage, it was rumored that Crime had some wicked choppers and lowriders. Did you notice any of them while you were in there?
Yes, they mostly do BMX, MTB and I did notice at least one chopper and a low rider as well as a rather flash looking job with one of those kids hitch ons attached
Excellent, thanks Clive, looks like i'm going to Redwood Park over the weekend!
They do have a web site www.crimecycles.com.au
Hi

I thought you all might be interested in this. A new community group is working to have vacant buildings/spaces in the CBD let on short term low cost leases and the first thing they have managed to get approval from Council for is a bike mechanic. I believe this is supported by BISA.
